I am going to the doctor this morning to see about switching my babies acid reflux medicine. I was wondering if anyone else's baby is being treated for reflux and if so what medicine did the doctor put your baby on?

My son was on acid refux med for a few months.  You'll have to tell me the name of the med to refresh my memory.  I know there's the standard one that most babies started with, and if that doesn't work there's another stronger one.

What happened with my son was the first one wasn't strong enough (he definitely improved, but not 100% ok), and the second one was too difficult to administer.  It's the kind that needed to be broken in half, crusehd and dissolved in water.  I could never get it completely dissolved, and it was hard to break the tiny pill in half.  So he wasn't getting the full dosage or the right dosage, and his symptoms didn't improve.  I switched back to the first kind.  At that time his symptoms were good enough for me to handle. There were still throwups here and there, but I could handle it.

What's going on with the current med that you feel like switching?

My baby was just diagnosed with reflux, he is on Zantac. We feed him upright and keep him that way for at least 30 minutes. We also bought the rock n play sleeper for him since it's on an angle.

Any other tips for dealing with a reflux baby?

I am a pediatric therapist and see this a lot--Zantac is what you start on (since it is extrememly safe and recommended as a first choice for babies).  They'll start you on the lowest dose and it takes about 2-4 weeks to see results.  They can up the dosage I think 2-3x before they switch to a stronger med.  

You can thicken formula or breastmilk, or replace with rice-based formula that should help as well, as it's more difficult for thicker liquids to be refluxed back up the throat than thinner liquids.  You'll need a larger sized nipple hole as well for those.  HTH =)

Everlie has Reflux, we were first put on Zantac, which works for very mild cases.  But it didn't work, so we are now on Prevacid.  Even after the med change, she still had clothes-soaking projectile vomits after every single feeding, so we just had her looked at again for Pyloric Stenosis.  That came back negative, so as of last week the pediatrician has us adding 1 TB of rice cereal per each 2oz of formula in her bottle and we're using a Playtex nurser Y shaped nipple which I had to cut open a bit bigger.  It is night and day.  She still spits-up, but the amount has significantly reduced and it isn't flying out of her mouth like a fountain anymore either.  She seems much happier!!

Oh wow Allie! Glad the new meds and rice cereal are working! I know how stressful it can be when they are hurting and can't tell you! Good thing is they do grow out of it :-)
