So DH and I are trying to figure out what's wrong with Tesla, and I'm hoping some of y'all can help!

Earlier today we took her outside, and she started eating grass. She didn't do her business, just ate grass. So we take her inside, and I start to worry because I had heard that when they eat grass it's because they're constipated. Sure enough, her stomach starts making some really bad noises. She seems comfortable, just tired. DH took her out and they walked around the neighborhood, but still nothing happened.

Have any of you had this problem before? Is it constipation or something else? And what can we do?

My dogs usually eat grass when their tummys hurt but they also eat it sometimes when they aren't. Oscar was actually eating some weed we had in the backyard, had to pull it up cause it's was doing something weird to his lips.

Did you change her food from what the shelter was feeding her? That can lead to upset tummy for a couple of days. A couple days after we got Oscar his stomach got bloated and rock hard, it happened in the middle of the night. He started whining I took him out and he had poop shooting out of his butt (sorry if that's TMI!!) but after that he was fine. Sometimes they just get tummy aches like us :-)

Is she eating? As long as she's eating she is fine, just keep watching her and taking her out on walks. This is a big adjustment too so she could be eating grass cause she's nervous. It's so hard when they don't feel good! It's not like they can tell you whats wrong either :-( if you google constipation in dogs there are some at home remindies you can try, we gave Murphy plain yogurt when he had stomach issues cause the probiantics (spelling?) help flush out his tummy ache.

I agree - dog's only do that when they're trying to self medicate themselves. I would definitely watch her to see if she eats normally and drinks normally. If she's still acting funny after another day I would take her in to the vet (you can never be too cautious).

Some dogs just eat grass because they like it. We have clients ask us this all the time and my boss tells them that he doesn't believe there's a true physiological connection between upset stomach and eating grass. One of my dogs is part cow no joke she's the dog in the corner of the park eating grass while everyone else is playing. Nothing wrong with her she just likes it. Dogs are actually more omnivorous than carniorous so it could be something in their genetic makeup that makes some dogs enjoy it more than others.

Though, she did throw it all up a couple days afterward. Thankfully DH heard her gagging and we moved her outside before it happened.

It's hard to say, sometimes they will eat grass for no reason and sometimes it is to soothe their stomach. My dog eats grass every time he goes outside, he's just weird!

Anytime you think they are having stomach trouble, try a bland diet for a day or two - boil hamburger and mix with plain rice, just make sure you eliminate as much grease as possible. My vet swears by it and this does seem to help my puppy.

Also, canned pumpkin is a good for both constipation and diarrhea, just a tablespoon or so with food.

How is her stomach doing now?  Our dog used to go through this every few weeks (stomach rumbling, eating grass but not food), even though we had her on organic, more "pure" dog food.  We're started adding fortiflora (a doggie probiotic) to her dinner meal and she rarely gets an upset stomach now.  It made sense to us when the vet suggested it - we usually have a yogurt everyday so we get our probiotics, so why not our pup?  :)
