You're absolutely right - the healthiest way to go is not pills or surgery, it's good old fashioned diet and exercise! The problem for me was that I have struggled with an over-eating disorder for 10 years now and I needed the kick-start that the phentermine gave me. And trust me, if you haven't made up your mind that this is it, and you are committed to loosing the weight then you will gain it back - no matter what pill you take. It's still been a struggle but that helped out so much in the beggining that it was what I needed.

And, Kohler is also right about the risks, albeit overall the rates and risk are small, they are a reality. I've been a critical care nurse for the past 7 years, so I wasn't unrealistic about the risk you take when you go on any drug - and I don't want anyone here to think you don't need to see your doctor first and really weigh the pros and cons - I was desperate and I needed help that's the only reason I tried them.

It's been 2 months since I went off them and I am still loosing weight (at a healthier speed and a healthier way) but I'm not unrealistic - had I not made up my mind to make a lifestyle change I know I would have gained it all right back.

It's not for everyone and you have to be really, brutally honest with yourself before you make the decision to take any medication. Like I said, I had that talk with myself and with my FI before I even went for my initial consultation with the "fat" doctor :) And for me it really was the best decision I ever made (except for saying "yes" to FI!) and I did it for me. Just be brutally honest with yourself.

And none of these drugs are meant to be taken for any more than a few weeks - these are not something you should be on for 6 months.
