At-home reception question

My mother in law is hosting us an AHR at their house in Washington when we visit in August. It was her idea to host it and I am happy to have her plan it (I am helping of course). She's taking care of everything, incl invitations, catering, cake, etc

Husband seems to think that because it was her idea, she pays?

I asked him what he wanted to do re: favors and he says it's his mother's job because she's hosting

Is this true? Because I thought favors should be a gift from us (the bride groom)

That's so sweet of your mother in law to host a reception for you. I think since she offered, she would do the favors as well. Plus you're living far away so that makes a difference too.
