Congrats to your friend!  Depending on how much you want to spend, I think hiring a newborn photographer to come to their house would be a wonderful gift. They will treasure those photos always.

You can find a lot of cute personalized things on etsy. I bought month stickers and a monogrammed wipe case from etsy.

not sure if your friend is the joking type but my brother and SIL got me the best / funniest baby shower gift.

A wooden spoon, ear plugs and the book "Go the f to sleep"  --- it's a children's book for adults....and it's pretty hysterical in my opinon.

If you want to go the meaningful route -- one of the nicest gifts I got was from a site called Personal Creations.  I loved seeing anything with LO's name on it.  (not sure if you even know the baby's name yet so just a suggestion)

Oh, and I second the onesie stickers -- I bought those for myself and now I buy them for all of my friends!

How about getting her a fashionable diaper bag and filling it up with non-baby things, things that maker HER happy, like jewelry, makeup, a good book. So you have something for the baby but also some things that she likes for herself.

I am no good at meaningful, but I do thoughtful really well.  I think gifts that would make the new mom's life easier will be remembered as well as anything "special" anyhow.  Maybe getting mom a GC for a massage or spa day so she can have some post-baby "me" time to feel pretty (along with an offer to babysit, of course) is always appreciated.  Same with paper plates/cup/bowls/etc. for those first few weeks at home with the baby so they don't have to worry about doing dishes too....or pay for a cleaning service to come by.  Then you could follow that up with some frozen meals after baby is born so they can eat real dinners as well or a basket of things she enjoys but couldn't have during pregnancy.  Not sure if any of that is along the lines of what you are looking for, but I thought I'd put them out there anyway :)
