What are the best 'relationship' books you have read, if you have one?

FI and I have been reading some together, and these are my favorites!

1. The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman

Bump!  BF and I aren't even engaged but have issues about stuff (money, arguments, etc.) and I want to start doing some reading on the topic.

Question...how did you get your FI to read them?

I love the Gottman book. In my master's program I learned a lot about his studies and admire his work very much.  Now if only I would listen more... (lol)!!

That's sweet that your FI reads them too!!!

I love the Gottman book too!  Also like Hold Me Tight: Seven Conversations for a Lifetime of Love

Update:  My boyfriend and I listened to the 5 Love Languages on the way to a hunting trip and it's been awesome since that day!

I love the concept of learning to love the other person the way they want to be loved.  We had fun discussing what we thought eachothers Love Language was.  It just helped me to hear a professional speak in a friendly and easy to understand way that my bf and I both could follow.

My bf was actually excited to listen to the book and I've got another one lined up for this weekends trip.

I'd highly recommend some reading (or in our case listening) before, during and after your engagement!

Do the Jung-Typology Test on the left. It is a little long but it's worth it.
There is a book you can get which helps you interpret your personality trait results called "Please Understand Me: Character & Temperament Type" by David Keirsey and Marilyn Bates.

My MIL and FIL took it when they did pre-marriage counseling and my FI and I did it. I really liked it because having an open dialogue with one another and discussing the different components to your personality really helps you get to know how you both operate and react in a variety of situations, including arguments. I definitely learned more about him and myself after we took this. Especially when it came to how we react and interpret each others reactions in a fight. Its helped a LOT. It was really interesting hearing his take on some of my personality traits.

It's a legitimate empirically researched pychology survey, and these results can also be applied to relationships with friends and family.

I'm excited to read everyone else's books too!

Next on the book List:

1. The Seven Principals for making a marriage work by John Gottman

2. The Five Love Languages
