I'm posting this for a friend of mind. Her cake is supposed to be 14 inches in diameter, but the largest pedastel cake stand she could find was 13 inches. Is it ok to use a cake stand that is smaller than the cake? If I remember correctly, there's some sort of cardboard underneath right?

I wouldn't because when they go to cut it, the cake might fall over the side. Maybe she can have one custom made...What are her colors,If i come across one I'll let you know.

yeah....I dont recommend that either...she should look into places like Sur La Table...I think they have them there....or call around to different bakers...and ask there opinion.

No. I asked the bakery we used about this and they recommended for our cake (4 tiers) that the stand be six inches in diameter larger than the base layer (to ensure it was big enough for the wood platform they put the cake on so it could be easily lifted).

Thanks so much for the input. I'll tell her it's not such a good idea... you definitely don't want the cake to fall over!
