Moving a lot can be very difficult on a career, and I have heard that many people have a hard time even getting a job if they are married into the military. Has this been the case for you? Any advice on how to look for a job around a new base?

well.....i am lucky that i am graduating as a nurse. the hospital told me i had a job after i get my license! so thats exciting for me. i basically went around post and just tried to network.....you get places by knowing people! i believe that 100%. network network network! good luck

Remember most bases have job annoucements as well.  Most on usajobs.com

And you should get spouse preference as well.  It's like a point rating system, with that you are a little higher on the list of other canidates. You should also be able to partake in classes for resume writing and stuff like that on base usually held at Family Support centers.

I already have a job :)   My approach was- if you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

I just wanted to see how everyone else is approaching this, and hopefully someone can get the advice they are looking for

I am currently having this problem right now, though I'm thinking a lot of it is not so much the fact that I'm a military spouse, but that the economic is soooo sluggish right now.

I was thinking that transferable jobs are easier for my lifestyle; banking, hotels, large chains, something that can be transferred to another state when we PCS again.

Anyone else have thoughts?

My DF is going to be going to be in flight school in a couple months so we will be moving every few months for the next couple of years. I'm planning on starting my own business, I already have my bachelors and I'm not in the right place mentally to go back to school to get my masters right now so I figured with moving around all the time why not just be my own boss.

I'm not 100% sure what I want to do, but I'm seriously considering photography (part of my degree program) or doing social media consulting for businesses, but we'll see!

Jenndover, I hear you on the transferable jobs, but I'm not sure if it's as simple as it sounds. That's what I was originally thinking I would do because I currently work for Marriott, but it's not as simple as what I thought. You see with Marriott (and I imagine with other large companies) regardless of how long you have been with the company you have to stay at that property and that position for 6 months before you can transfer. Second, there has to be a position opening where ever you happen to be PCSing. And not to add anymore negativity, but often times with those companies (like Marriott) in order to move up in the company and not just stay at the same position you have to work at the big properties and all of those are in the large cities. And lets face it most bases aren't near large cities, at least the Marine Corp isn't!

So I swear I'm not trying to rain on your parade, I just wanted to share my experience since you mentioned hotels on your list. I'm sure it can be done, but I figured it's better to know the battle before you get in it right?

I'm working towards my bachelors in Englsh so I can teach high school english but I'm also minorig in either biology or marine science so I can be licensed to teach those typs of classes. If I can't find a position in a school or with the DOD then I can work at a local wildlife conservatory or a zoo or aquarium in their education department there. I crrently work as a veterinay technician and while I don't make a lot of money I love the work and I know I will alway be able to find a job doing that. I'll eventually go back to school and get my master's so I can teach at the college level as well.
