I am a tad clueless about Latino wedding traditions during the ceremony--esp catholic mass. I keep on hearing about "el lazo, 13 coins, el velo and etc..." but have no idea how to do these and the meaning

Are any of you incorporating Latino traditions into your wedding ceremony? If so, which ones? Can you share why are you including them to your ceremony?

Thanks ! :)

We aren't doing any traditions. Most of the traditions in my family center around the reception. I'm sure my grandma would know all of the Catholic traditions. I know there is a blessing bouquet or something. Sorry that I don't know much, but I'll ask my gran.

Hahaha Bonnie we are doing the money dance too for sure!!  I think that's just a regular american tradition though, don't know????  I think a lot of wedding planners these days are trying to wean us brides off that tradition though(at least here in SF), because I've been to a few weddings in the past couple of years and the 3 that I encountered were very insulted that the bride wanted the money dance.  I guess they might have been more snooty here than anywhere else across the country???  Who cares, I'm still doin' it!

We are doing the lazo which binds the couple together as one and its usually 2 cords attached to each other shaped in the figure 8.   One loop will go around the bride and the other around the groom and then there will be some sort of blessing during this time.  This is actually a tradition that originates from Spain and was brought over to Latin America AND the Phillipines (yes, they colonized in the Phillipines in case any of you didn't know...).  My FI is half filipino and half Irish so I thought this would be one tradition that both of our families could understand during the ceremony.

The coins we aren't doing (I think) just because no one else in our family has ever done it!  lol  I do know that it symbolizes that the groom will pledge to always support the bride and means that he will trust in her. Something about if she accepts the coins, then that means the bride will trust the groom's ability to provide for his family and that she will use his provisions wisely. The number thirteen is used to symbolize Christ and his twelve apostles.

yea the money dance has always been done in my family and among my relatives. I don't see why everyone is so against it nowadays. Everyone from my side will understand, I hope people from FI side aren't offended.

We're doing the full catholic mass although FI isn't Catholic or Mexican, and our wedding party is including "Padrinos" for Matrimonio, Lazo, Arras (coins), Libro y Rosario (Bible & Rosary), Cojines (kneeling cushions), Ramo (flower for the Blessed Virgin).

What my mom is having a hard time understanding is why we aren't doing Padrinos for everything  Have you seen an invite that lists over 50 people that are "sponsoring" everything from the garter to the bar?  I just can't bring myself to do that!  We are paying for most of it ourselves, with a little help from family, but I can't see asking others to pay for our wedding.

But we are doing the money dance...Mexican tradition...can't get away from that. haha!

Money dance and the other "wedding traditions", i.e. garter, bouquet... that's it.

We will be giving flowers to the Blessed Virgin Mary.  Other that that...nothing else.  They want me to do the laso, but unless FI (White boy turning Latino slowly) insists, it's a no go.
