Is it just me or is it just crazy for people to spend upwards of 50,000 on a wedding that is only one day? I am new to the site and I am getting very addicted but I am getting so frustrated hearing people spend so much money! Whatever happened to the day when the mothers made the food, it was held at a local hall, and the dress was a hand me down from grandma! I am from Napa, CA and live on a 26 acre "farm" not really any animals just vineyards. So I have always imagined getting married at home (since it just gorgeous with water and vineyards in the background) and it would help save a little money. I want a small (100 people) wedding and it still going to cost an arm and a leg. My parents are paying for the wedding so its not that funds are short but it is just so frustrating when something that would cost 50 dollars on a normal day is now 500 because its for a wedding! I wanted to rent a tent for the food, cake, and dance floor that was 1000 dollars! I dont want to buy the tent just rent it!  Why would a tent cost that much money! I just cant imagine letting my parents pay over 50,000 for my wedding. That is like a good down payment for a house, which to me is way more logical. Dont get me wrong I do want the "Cinderella" wedding but yikes does it cost a lot. WOW anyways thanks for letting me vent ladies I feel a little better.

welcome to the world of weddings...if you tack on the word "wedding" to any event, it seems like vendors can quadruple the prices!!

Yah sticker shock sucks when you are so excited to start planning but this was posted awhile back and it really made me laugh.

Yeah, its ridiculous.  Sometimes I want to pretend I'm 16 and just say that I'm not having a wedding, I'm having a Sweet 16, which are sometimes just as extravegant as weddings!   ha!  That would save me a bundle I'm sure.  Too bad no one would believe I'm 16!!!  lol.  What if I said I was having a "corporate party" and then just showed up in a gown??

after i booked our bakery, i read a review where instead of ordering a wedding cake...they just ordered 4 cakes and asked that they be decorated in white buttercream icing....saved a TON of money....ugh....

Wow you have the EXACT same opinion as me haha. I was shocked to see how much things were. I also grew up on a 60 acre "farm", we did not farm, just had some horses. Well the venues I wanted were 10,000 + so my parents and I are hosting the wedding at their house. It will be beautiful because it will be personal and original. We also have to rent a large tent (weather) and it is costing 2100 just to rent!!

yep I was very sticker shock -still am!  At first I said screw it and we bought a house but then my parents offered to pay to I was ok with it but still am very sticker shocked. The average wedding in US costs 40K.  Where does the average person in the middle states get that money I mean its ok for CA or NY but really?  Some people get paid that much in a year?  The caterer we used for our engagement pary charged 100 pp now thats its the wedding wanted to double that!!! My mom thankfully talked him down a bit!  But really what's the deal?  Well in any case welcome to PW.  You can vent all you want on here!  I know I do~ haha

i think all of us were/are sticker-shocked at the cost of weddings.

when we were considering a hotel for our recpetion venue - we were amazed that a normal dinner was $50 per head, but b/c it was for a wedding, the price got jacked to $100 pp - same food - just for a different type of celebration...  it's retarted!

and i dont really want a 'rella wedding - i just want a fun celebration - nothing fancy - no fancy invites, etc...

i think "average" weddings are up to $30-40K now -  depends on location and all the extras we want...

this sums it all up!

I just watched that UTube video for the first time and it made my Monday morning!  I too am so frustrated with wedding prices...I actually wanted a backyard wedding and was planning on doing so in my Aunt and Uncle's backyard in San Diego.  However...after you start renting everything and paying for the electricity to be ran and porta potties (yes you have to supply them if you have over a certain number of guests), it was going to cost me more to do it that way than renting out a venue!

Yes, as soon as some vendors here the word "wedding", their eyes glaze over and dollor signs appear. They rub their hands together and emit a devious laugh. It's crazy.
