Here's another youtube about wedding cakes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gimiDBAK2wA&feature=related. So funny but unfortunately, so true!

So yes, I agree that it is not practical to spend 50K+ on a wedding. However, vendors purposely hike up the price when you mention the word "wedding." That is why FI and I went on a 4-month spree of looking for an affordable yet beautiful venue. It was tough but fortunately, we found one. I also found out that the ceiling swag at my venue can cost up to $1,000 or more. Crazy!!!

I don't want to spend more than 30K but that thought still makes me feel guilty. I can use that money toward a down payment on another house or invest it in our SEP-IRA. =( It's not easy b/c FI, his family, and my family want a traditional big filipino wedding (250+ people). So, I was singled out on this decision.

Since you are doing it at your house, try getting vendors to give you quotes for the "party" you are throwing. That isn't a lie and it will save you buckets.

But yes, weddings are grossly expensive.

omg! LA!!  talk about traditional Filipino wedding!

are you guys doing a brunch the day after also??  i'm afraid of getting that bill!

Welcome to the site!  I agree with the other ladies..."wedding" attached to purchases jacks up the price, which is why in most cases I try to DIY or network as much as I possibly can.  On the bright side, you have a large expense covered just by where your venue is.  It sounds so gorgeous, & that's the type of place Brides pay crazy money for, because it's for a "wedding".  Best wishes, & Congratulations:)

Dirty - I doubt we'll have enough funds for the brunch the day after. We still have to save $$ for the honeymoon! =/

that's why FI's parents added a bunch of people...they said...."they knew Andy when he was a little boy!"

And HOW long has it been since he's seen these people??  Decades!!!

I have to remind myself to not do that when my kid gets married. Seriously...it's all about the bride/groom. That's when I draw the line. My parents can invite their friends but not people they haven't seen or talked to in decades!

it gets a bit ridiculous really...

i'm super glad that we are having an intimate dw in hawaii - just us really - and no pressure from all the outside peripheral crap! hahaha

so then when we have our church ceremony and huge reception next year - it will be more of a party b/c we'll have already been married  -  i cannot wait to show a slideshow of our hawaii dw

Those you tube videos sum it all up.  I do get a little bit of chest pain when I start to think about our expenses, so I just dont look at our budget book anymore. Anyone interested in buying an organ so I can enough money to pay for my wedding ???
