I also had the trece arras as part of my ceremony, but not an entirely different ceremony.

However, this is not really related, but I just wanted to let you know that I am a social studies teacher and just taught about Ghana (the empire) today!!  Sumanguru, gold / salt trade, etc.  Tomorrow, we are diving into Mali, Sundiata, and Mansa Musa.  I was excited when I saw your name.  I would love to go there some day!

We had two ceremonies too, except we did them both on the same day. My husband is Vietnamese, and I'm Filipino. We did a traditional Vietnamese tea ceremony in the afternoon, a Catholic ceremony with Filipino traditions in the evening, followed by our reception. The Vietnamese tea ceremony involved a procession from the groom's parents' home to my parents' home. My family was introduced to his family, gifts were presented and tea was served to all the elders. Afterwards, his family took me back to his parents' home. His family was introduced to my family, we burned incense and prayed to his ancestors. His mom gave me jewelry, and then we served tea to all of his elders. I also wore the traditional Vietnamese dress.

I'm Persian too...We also did a fusion "American"/Persian wedding. People LOVED being a part of our wedding because it was such a different cultural experience for them. And I was really glad I was able to expose our friends to my background. I think cultural weddings make for the most beautiful and unique experiences.

@pink... The modern Ghana gets its name from the old empire, and we learned about that in school ages ago. Do you teach high school or grade school? if you ever get the opportunity to visit W. Africa, you should definitely visit Ghana, you would love it!

for the coins - we are not using gold either - we will be using the same coins my mother and father used at their wedding - silver dollars minted at the time when the Philippines was still a colony of the USA... so theyre pretty old...  =)
