I have a specific look that is in my mind for displaying my cupcakes + 8 inch cake, and I'm not really finding much that is calling to me that is available for purchase and that would be in my teeny tiny budget for it.  This is an idea of the type of look that I'd like:

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I might go about making something like this?

Thanks!  I completely forgot to post the resolution to this on this thread (I posted it on the main page though so you might have seen it).  Everywhere I looked the price was $200 plus and nothing at Goodwill or Salvation Army (or anywhere for that matter) was really popping out to me as something that I could make to look like this or have this feel.  So I was kinda despairing that I would get what I was hoping for in this.  Then I went to meet with my baker to pay the deposit, and while there the topic of the cake stand came up.  Turns out that he JUST got in the perfect stand and is willing to let me use it for free!  Here's what he has:

He's painting it silver before the wedding and I'll put a cloth of some sort around the base.  I'm SOOOOO stoked!!  In addition to that, I'll be having some other desserts, so I made a couple of "dessert" stands to go with that:

That's awesome!  Who's your baker?  Do they have anymore stands like that?

Pacific Bakery is my baker:  http://www.pacificbakery.net/  As far as I know, he only has the one.  It was a gift that a friend of his made and gave to him to use.  :)
