Cake?

I know, I'm on a cake binge right now. I can't stop obsessing about it!

FI and I are thinking of making our own wedding cake together. Did anyone else do this?

I am doing it.

I love to bake and make goodies and honestly when I thought about the price vs the time it actually takes to make and bake a cake I could not justify the purchase.

First: I made sure I knew the design I wanted to make then I made a mock trial of the cake and cooled it.

Second: I made the frosting and made sure I knew how it would dry on the cake and how the decorations would hold etc.

Third: I found the fondant design maker I wanted. . . well sort of. . . I went to the Poly Clay Aisle and found the shape and design I wanted there as the cake section did not have it. Also there are far more design options if you look at poly clay and yes it is safe so long as you do not use poly clay in them and wash in hot water. I made sure it was all plastic and only plastic would touch the fondant.

You can use a dab of buttercream to hold fondant design on buttercreme or fondant covered cake. Some people use chocolate too, but I have never used that method.

Transport and Pedastals - I am opting NOT to put the cake one layer on another. I am using a 3 Tier Cake Tree and cupcakes.

Make sure you can make a day or two before and store in fridge or freezer.Do not Freeze Icing. You can decorate the cake frozen and is recomended if you have trouble with dirty icing.

I did not, but my friend's FI made theirs and I think it turned out spectacular! I wouldn't try this if you want something really fancy, because the art of cake decorating is something that takes awhile to get good at, but a cute little cake should be fairly easy and fun to practice!

Picture Butterflies and Snowflakes instead of flowers and Wedwood blue for the main all over color and Blue highlights and chapmpagne for the butterflies and white for the snowflakes.

This is the Blue that will be the overall color of the cake.

My biggest concern at this point is stacking. I'm not worried about covering it with fondant or the details, I feel confident in my ability. I'm just afraid of a 4 tiered stacked cake.  =P

I made mine! I've made 4 and 5 tier cakes before, but I didn't want the stress of handling that on my wedding day, so I did a very simple 2-tier cake with a decorative DIY topper & a bunch of dessert cakes. I made some of them myself, and my family made the rest.

Buy a 3 tier or more seperate cake stand so that you do not need to stack because adding dowls etc is a pain in the buttocks.

I did that once for my daughter 5th birthday and regretted it. If you use those pretty stands you can make nice designs on the tops of each of the cakes. From Fondant ribbons to real/fake flowers.

I didn't, but a friend of mine did a few years ago and it was so pretty.  I am on this kick that I want to bake a very fancy cake, so this Sunday, I will start baking.  I'm crossing my fingers it will turn out like I have envisioned.  : )
