yea...it's interesting.  There is all this talk about nursing shortages but it's very regional.  I know they need nurses in AZ cause I keep getting headhunter emails.  There is def a hiring freeze going on.

Anyone's else's census been back and forth?  I swear that some weeks we have 14pts and others we're maxed at 36!  I don;t qwant to wish people sick but it is scary sometimes.

I've heard from quite a few of the senior nursing students that come through my units for a rotation that getting a job is super hard in NJ right now. My hospital offers fellowships every year where we pick students and pay for their nursing school and they work for us after they're done - we took less than half this year than we have in past years.

@DreaminBride - yeah our census has been really wierd lately - up and down day to day - our trauma ICU has been the busiest but even that census has really been varying. I think if NJ really gets hit with H1N1 we'll be busy the rest of the winter, we'll see.

I graduate in December and the job market is TOUGH! I'm in Philadelphia area, and like many of you are saying, there are still tons of May grads without positions. I'm really hoping that after the winter holidays things will pick back up and budgets will be un-frozen.

I need a job to pay for my wedding!! hehe.

When I graduated in 2008 we had the choice of picking where we wanted to work. Canada has such a nursing shortage it's crazy. Now it has slowed down a bit and I notice there is definetly a decrease in the positions offered online in BC.

I know at the hospital I'm at now we have a few RN full time positions available. The LPNS however have no fulltime openings available. We have a college in town pushing LPNs out as fast as they can but then they graduate and can only find casual work.

I'm thankfully in a fulltime permanent RN line.

Yeah, I'm seeing VERY FEW LPNs used in the hospitals in NJ anymore - they totally got phased out of hospitals and into nursing homes.

^^Yeah most of the casual LPNs work in the care homes and pick up shifts occasionally at the hospital. We do have LPNs but the ones in fulltime spots stay in them usually till they retire.

yes! we're on a hiring freeze even though we really need to hire about 10-15 more nurses.  and we are also on a salary freeze. but i really just feel grateful that i have my job! a few people i've talked with from other hospitals in the area said their administration was actually making them take 5-10% pay cuts!
