FEELING SAD :-(

As you all have read before, my fiancé and I recently booked our honeymoon to Mexico! We are/ were so excited!!! After we booked it, I posted that my stepdad was being a total downer about it all bc he thinks we are idiots for wanting to go to Mexico! He thinks it's the most unsafe place we could have chosen and that we didn't think it thru. Well, apparently he got into my moms head also, bc NOW she's uneasy about our choice of Mexico! AND to make it worse, my sister just visited me at work and now SHE's caught wind of the danger of Mexico. She said we shouldn't have any alcohol whatsoever bc it will impair our judgement and we might run into some Mexican gangs and be killed!!! I mean REALLY PEOPLE!?!? Come on!!!! I am not 13 years old! I've left the country twice before and I have absolutely no plans of running off with a bunch a Mexican civilians to unsafe territory!

I am just so sad bc I feel like everyone thinks I'm an idiot for taking a honeymoon to Mexico :-( This is something I wanted more than anything else and people are making me feel like I can't enjoy it.

I know I asked this before, but if any of you have any warnings to give me about Mexico or any advice, I would appreciate anything! I need to reassure people that I'm going to be safe down there And I'm not an idiot.
Is my family justified in thinking I made a poor choice?

Thanks so much!!!

I'm sorry!! Yes some part of Mexico is unsafe. But most of all the city with a high number of tourest the "Gangs" are less likely to kill you. Good Luck

Omg, I know how it feels when people make you feel stupid for doing something you want! I'm going to Mexico too, and I'm not worried about it! Like you said, you're not a kid...you probably have good judgement! Don't go anywhere out of the ordinary or alone or what not, but you will be fine! It's hard, but try to just have what they say go in one ear and out the other. Just stick to the safe parts, and obviously don't get so drunk you might make bad choices, but a few drinks for fun won't hurt! Seriously, just enjoy it!! *HUGS*

Mexico is as safe as any other place in the world.  Of course it has it gangs/violence but what place doesn't.  I live in Chicago and there are murders happening left and right.  Of course if you watch the new they are putting the worst on there showing what is going on.  In reality, it is no different any where else.  People go missing all the times in the states, people get killed, children get kidnapped.  Sadly, that is just the way it is.  You can get shot anywhere not just Mexico.  It goes the same for being robbed/kidnapped whatever.

Both of my SILs just came back from Mexico and not a nice tourist town.  They went into regular cities and they saw nothing.  They said of course they made sure they were aware of their surroundings but who doesn't do that?  I always make sure no one is walking behind me even during the day.  I am always aware of my surroundings.

Soon.Mrs.Davis you are not an idiot trust me.  Everyone just gets nervous about what they see in the news and assume it is going on everywhere.  I went to Cancun two years ago...there was nothing going on and we went into "the city".  So, just enjoy your honeymoon and don't drink the water lol.

FSIL was there exactly 1 year ago and she says it was wonderful, I believe they were at the same resort that you're going to if I remember correctly.
My sister, her hubby and 10 of their friends are all going there on Saturday. My sister is the biggest worrier, so if she's going it must be ok! Some of her group have been there dozens of times (literally dozens - more money than they know what to do with! So lucky! Lol) and they have never had any problems.

Just stay out of dodgy areas...and don't talk to strangers!! Lol

First of all, I'm so sorry that your family is giving u a hard time. My DH & I have been to Mexico several times (including our honeymoon) and we had a blast!!! And so will you! Where r u guys going? I would highly suggest staying in Cabo, Puerto Vallarta, and Cozumel.

On a more personal note, do your best not to stress out when family or friends are being overly opinionated. I'm sure it's coming from a place of concern & love and they probably have no clue how frustrated you are. I know that is exactly how I felt when we told our guests that we were honeymooning in Cabo & Puerto Vallarta. We got the usual "Why Mexico?" or "Isn't it really dangerous there?" But my hubby & I would just laugh it off and say that "we travel a lot and we have done our research" then smile, change the subject, or walk away if they attempted to press the matter further.

Good luck, Hun :)

Actually, I've heard some pretty horrible/crazy stories from my FSIL about her friend who knows friends who went and something happened to them. -- I am scared for life and will NEVER go to MEXICO! Ever. Just Sayin'

Just wanted to add one more thing.  Obviously people are still going to Mexico because tripadvisor has alot of recent reviews on resorts in Mexico.

julie9dorf sorry that your scared to go to Mexico but honestly you shouldn't. :)  At least not scared for your life.

I've been to Cancun twice, and will be going a third time for my honeymoon. Not once have I ever felt unsafe, and I've done pretty much every excursion there is to do, went into the towns, etc. I'm not sure what part of MX you are going but I love Cancun and would recommend going there to anyone. The main thing is just keep an eye on your belongings and don't travel out of the hotel zone alone.

Odds are the Mexican Gangs are not at the resort you will be at. Tell them millions of people visit Mexico every year with no problems.
