Hi Ladies,

I am dieing of anxiety and anticipation over here. I have known I am pregnant for two weeks now. (Just started week 6) and I still have over 2 more weeks until my first dr. appointment. Why must I wait so long? Most days I feel pretty damn good, other days I have a few minor aches or bloat. I just want to know that everything is ok. Some days I feel super preggers and other days I don't. No m/s yet.

Have all of you had your first appointment? Is it normal to have to wait this long?

What should I expect for my first appointment? The good bad and the ugly please!

Waiting til 8 weeks is totally normal for a pregnancy with no issues. Those of us on here who have already had one have only done so because of issues related to the pregnancy. I haven't had my first official appointment for this one, but I had an u/s and bloodwork.

I imagine the first appointment can vary by doctor. The main things to expect would be a pelvic exam and pap smear, bloodwork, urine sample, listening for baby's heartbeat, and possibly an u/s. I know that for my doctor it isn't standard to have one at the first appt. Come up with a list of questions you might have for the dr, otherwise they just go over the basics. My doctor doesn't really do much else unless something comes back odd from the tests.

I've heard that most docs make you wait 8 weeks.  I got my BFP last Tuesday and was sitting at my dr's office by Fri. (very surprised I got in so early) I had a urine test, ultrasound and bloodwork -- so far so good but still very early.  He told me to come back in 10-14 days -- (and if I have any bleeding to call him immediately) hopefully by then he said he'll be able to see the heartbeat.  He said that when he hears the heartbeat the risk of m/c drops to only 5%.

Good luck at your appoint and keep us posted!

My dr said she doesn't do her first real appointment and u/s until 7-8 weeks.  She saw me at 4 weeks just to give me a ton of free prenatals and a book along with telling me what I can and can't do.  We will have our appointment next monday!!!  We are really excited!  But I ended up having to go in early and get an u/s due to some spotting but everything was good.

I'm not really sure what to expect on Monday...i'm just hoping to be able to see or hear a heartbeat and feel like i'm getting closer to "freedom"...freedom does not only mean telling people but hopefully starting to feel better!!! :(

If it makes you feel any better, here in Canada we don't ususally get our first u/s until 12 weeks... I did see my family doctor around 9 weeks, but that was a really useless appointment.

I got my bfp on Monday Aug 15 and called my RE's office the next day (it took awhile to sink in and several more at home tests for me to really believe I got a bfp). They had me go into a local lab on Wednesday and again on Friday to check my HCG levels and make sure they were doubling. Once they knew the numbers were good I was scheduled to come in for an ultrasound at the 6 week mark. I think the ob/gyn's in that office ordinarily wait to 8 or 10 weeks for the first appt but since I was under the care of an RE and we had done an IUI they have a different protocol.
My next u/s was supposed to be at 8 weeks but because of my travel schedule it will be at week 9. Appt #2, for me, will be with the RE and if all is well I will be released to the regular doctor.
My appt consisted of taking basic vitals (weight, blood pressure, etc.), a trans-vaginal ultrasound, a general discussion of vitamins, restrictions, any questions or concerns that we had at that point. The u/s is not as bad as you might think and more than anything it is exciting. The moment you see that teeny tiny heart beating the world stops. It is amazing and surreal.

I know how hard it must be for you to wait. I think I would be going crazy especially since I don't really have any symptoms (nothing major) and don't "feel" pregnant. The u/s picture I have is the only thing that makes it real at this point.
Hang in there, you are almost there!!
hth! :)

I didn't see anyone until 8 weeks too. I didn't even go for bloods or anything to confirm the pregnancy. I just had my positive home pregnancy pee sticks (ALOT of them LOL!) and I phoned the Docs and they said that's all we need to hear and we'll see you in a month (at 8 weeks).

In my case that appointment included them checking my urine, weight, blood pressure and LMP date. The gynae then did a quick ultrasound to make sure baby was in the right place and looked about the right size compared to LMP date etc and we could see the heart beating.

Beleive me I know how excrutiating the wait is!

Yes the wait is killing me...I am dieing to tell family and friends but I want to wait until I see the Dr. first. I just want to make sure everything is going the way it should be. Plus most days I don't even "feel pregnant" besides being tired, sometimes bloated and tender boobs. I know I shouldn't complain but it just doesn't feel totally real yet. 7 weeks today! just over a week until our appointment!

I saw my dr at around 5 weeks, 4 days and he just did an exam. I went back 2 weeks later and he did ultrasound. Every dr is different though - I didn't have blood work till the 2nd trimester.

Try not to stress, I know it's hard!!!
