I went out to my garden last night with the intention of cutting back the squash and zucchini leaves because they were starting to get so big as to crowd my tomatoes (can't have that!) and a couple other things.
Well, as I was cutting back, I discovered that a couple of my onions had died (the foliage fell off and what remained was dark brown). I pulled them out and the roots had rotted. I realized what happened was the combination of rain and shade
(from the squash leaves) was a problem for them (they like well-drained soil). So I just got rid of the other 4 or so that were still there, and now no more onions. :( Fail.
But it's not a huge loss, since onions take up valuable space in the garden for SOOOOOO long before they're ready to harvest.
Anyway, as I was cutting and pulling, I started to get irrationally angry at the squash for 1) killing my onions, and 2) scratching me all to hell with it's tiny little thorns. So I just pulled it out! I didn't care for that variety anyway,
lol!
