My sister in law who is a pro photographer posted this article on facebook...something to keep in mind

http://www.kristenboothblog.net/2012/01/for-brides-why-wedding-photographers-are-so-expensive/

Excellent points!! And seriously, you get what you pay for. If you just want some pictures, you can find people for less than $1000 that will just be there, take photos, and then send you copies on a disk or something.

Thinking a good photographer should only get paid for the day of a wedding is like saying I should only get paid based on how many meetings I attend.

I agree that photographers charge a lot of money but I also agree that the reason they o so is because it is their job and they aren't on salary.

That doesn't mean if you find a photog for less than 3k then their work is shit, I didn't want to pay 3k so I didn't. I did my research and met with a photog in my price range who created beautiful photos. Our cost was $1300, and that's a NJ price.

I have never once said "Oh how dare this person charge 6k, they are just pointing and shooting" I know a lot goes into that. There is a local photog in my area that STARTS at 6k- it's her and two assistants, so that 6k has to go to her.... her two assistants...rent...gas to make it to the wedding and the funds to produce the images and make them into a album for the couple- which probably costs a few bucks.... at the end of the day is 6k really enough?

Usually if you go with a stand alone photog you will be charged more because of the above reasons, if you can find a company, like I did you will pay low.

Good article. I feel like you really need to see the work to be able to 'price' the photographer.  I looked at two photographers who were pretty even in price and we had pros and cons with both.  We had great chemistry with both, but had to choose. We did go with the one that was slightly higher in price, but we could see the difference with his photographs and we spoke with personal friends who experienced both of their work at weddings they were in.  You also have to factor in if they will be requesting gas, dinner at the reception, and other travel fees.  Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for posting that! I love the way your SIL makes her points. Very true. There are different price ranges for everything, but that "Craigslist Bride" was silly for saying some of those things!

As a freelancer myself, I totally sympathize with WHY wedding photographers charge so much money. It can be really hard not having a steady pay check, and I think people don't realize that in the freelancing world we can go weeks or even months on end with no work. So that's why it does charge a bit more.

I actually saw this post on my photographer's FB the other day, funny that it's your SIL! She made some awesome points!

Great post from your sis! Luckly I have a few friends turned photographers that are both reasonably priced and have great talent :)
