On Saturday, DH and I went to our house to paint (we move in on the 19th) and I was so shocked to see new flowers.  The plants were planted by the seller so we have no clue what the flowers are.  I kinda feel dumb asking b/c the red ones look like roses but then not really.  So hoping you guys know without a doubt.

The red ones, definitely roses. There are so many varieties and this looks like a more vintage or wild variety than what you think of when you think of modern roses.  The purple and white flowers look like a butterfly bush (great for attracting butterflies!) but I need to look some more.  I used to have a few at my old place.

Finally, the orange flowers are Asiatic Lillies.  Wonderfully fragrant flowers (a lot of brides use them in bouquets) and come in many different colors.

oooh thanks doolittle!  i am surprised they are roses!  they look so well, different.

attracting butterflies!?  oh boy, lol.

thank you so much!

ditto doolittle - looks like you've got some beautiful roses and Asiatic lillies on your hands! And it looks like somebody's been pruning and fertilizing them too - what an awesome show of flowers!

ditto doolittle looks like photo 1858073-1 As for this one, I guess you mean the dark green grassy plant in the middle? Looks like liriope - and there are a million varieties, but they do flower. Like this:

And the ones to the right of the liriope look like hostas, which also flower beautifully (I think in summer - mine are flowering white right now). Here is one that looks similar to yours (but again, there are a ton of different varieties):

Whoever lived there before obviously took an interest in the garden - lucky you!! You've got beautiful, mature plants already established =)

Just an FYI - in the past when I have had trouble remembering what I planted I took a stem to my local nursery and they identified the plant for me!!

Ditto doolittle--the red ones are roses.

The purple and white flowers are Veronica.

Are you talking about the spiky leafed plant or the plant with the green and white leaves? The spiky leaf plant looks like a daylily. The green and white plant is a hosta.

And yes, the orange flowers are Asiatic lillies!

@jessie: thanks!  good to know! :)

@dreaday: yeah, i was talking about the spiky leafed plant but i am glad that i know what the green & white plants are now!

@gator: i know, it is so exciting to see all these plants growing.  i also think the seller took a big interest in the yard.  it is so weird too b/c when we first saw the house in jan/feb (dead of winter) i never would have thought they would grow to be so beautiful.  they seriously looked like dead plants when we first moved in.  DH has been taking a big interest in them too.  he is watering and everything.

Oh, dreaday - I didn't think about daylily - it could be that too!

Midnyte - if they are daylillies, this is the only "tip" I know: My grandma always had me go pick off the blooms at the end of their blooming day, since they would wilt and look messy the next day. She said it kept them blooming consistently. I don't know if there is any truth to that, but couldn't hurt to try :)
