I found this rain barrel idea on YHL and just had to do it too!  I actually typed in "rain barrel" into craigslist and found a 55 gal plastic drum for $15.  It's white, so it blends with our house color and we'll be installing it in the backyard.  Matt still needs to do all the spicket and down spout stuff... but when it's done we'll be able to water our plants with rain water rather than waste tap. :)

I'll post pics of ours when we're done.  Here is YHL's.

You can also buy them already made here.  Or search your local area for workshops that help you make your own. :)

DH got me one for my birthday last weekend! I haven't set it out yet, but that's my plan for this week.

This is the one (from Lowe's):

Suncast 50-Gallon Rain Barrel

This one will go in the backyard. I needed it to be shorter than a barrel since it will sit underneath a window. I don't want to be able to see it from inside! I want to get one for the front yard that's a little more decorative.

A tip: Check with your county or city before buying. Many of them are selling them cheap in an effort to get communities to conserve water. Our county public works office is selling rain barrels for $45 and composters for $39!

We started prepping our rain barrel!

Here are some pics!

We got the barrel from Craigslist for $15.  It held vinegar so Matt had to clean it out real good.  I stayed inside and made dinner...and took pics.

We used Krylon fusion spray paint.  (Meant for plastic and drys really fast)  We picked tan so that it blends with the house.  It's not the prettiest barrel!!

I work as a Chemist for Sherwin-Williams...so I spend a lot of time "painting".  Matt thought he would spray without me... for the first time ever.  I turned my back for seriously a min...and this is what I find when I look back!

All finished!

Now all we have to do is attach the hose bibb and put it under the down spout in the corner at the back of the house.

Stay tuned!!

Also, please be sure to check your state laws regarding water rights! In Colorado it is NOT legal to harvest rain water or snow melt, as that water technically belongs to the downstream user.

We have a rain barrel anyway, but we are prepared to fight for it if we are reported.

Um... yeah me too.  Matt is all gung-ho about installing this landscape brick structure with trellis cover to grow some kind of vining flower.  It costed it out and quoted me $125!  OMG...no sweetie...just install my rain barrel...without all the drama. :)
