Help...I don't want to move to Doha

its sad to see that stereotypes is what keeps people from exploring our world. i agree w/ sparkl, the americans who get harassed or disliked abroad are the loud, disrespectful, and obnoxious ones. when i lived in london, i'd be soooooooooo embarassed for my fellow americans when i saw "that kind of american" on the train with me or at the restaurant next to me. but as long as you're respectful of that countries culture, you will be left alone, if not embraced.

the only thing i'd worry about is you being homesick. but if they provide trips home, then you'll be ok. a couple of years will fly by and you'll have one of the coolest stories to tell your friends/families/children.

Oh my...I can only imagine how youa re feeling. I was in Dubai last year and we stopped in Doha on the way there. It was just the airport, but while in air it seemed pretty nice. Think of it this way...it's a once in a lifetime oppurtunity. You can say you live in a serious extoic place that you wouldn't have gone to normally. You get to experience a different culture and live a different lifestyle. I'm sure it'll take some adjusting, but it's not forever! :)

OMG thanks you guys! And thank you Sparks for the deets! I will go home tonight and read more into what is there and what not! I hope that I would not be a disrespectful American while I was there...but that is something I seriously need to learn about...the culture and how i as a woman am suppose to act and be. I've read you don't have to cover up, but there are still a lots of red tape to go through if I wanted to find a job while I was there!

Thanks so much for that sparklfly!  I too have traveled extensively.  It was part of my husband's business.  My son was in 17 countries by the time he was 5 mos. old.  I do agree with you that many Americans who travel do behave like they are in the States which is a big mistake.  Fortunately for us, it's what we know.  I will say, however, that the recent tenor of our politics over the last 5 or 6 years has taken a huge toll on our reputation.  Perhaps its because I'm not in the military, but I was actually verbally accosted on a train in Paris for no reason except I was an American.  We're easy to spot.  On our recent trip to the Olympics we were warned by NBC not to go too far off the beaten path and to be aware of our surroundings.  I don't frighten easily, but it made me very, very uncomfortable.  You are also right that common sense applies when in a foriegn country.  Unfortuantely for some common sense is an uncommon thing and it gives traveling Americans sort of a bad reputation. LOL.

Oh......spoke to husband this morning who said that Doha is supposed to be great.  He said to follow sparklfly's advice.  He said it's great advice.
