We finally got the shipment from my in-laws and here's the hutch we inherited from DH's grandmother.  It's A LOT plainer than I remember it being in Grammy's house... I thought I remembered it having a lot more interesting lines and vintage charm.  Even so, I still need to incorporate it in my front room.  :)  So how can I jazz this baby up?  It's white and has yellow paint on the back inside, it's actually a really pale pastel yellow. 

I also have this chair coming this week, which should bring in the yellow a bit more...

Here's the other side of the room, I slip-covered the couch so it's grey... all the accessories right now are black, white, and aqua.

I need to get covers for some of my black throw pillows for sure, I know I need some more yellow than just the chair and the hutch.  I even found the fabric the chair is made of so I can order it online and make 2 coordinating pillows. 

I feel like the room just looks like a hot mess right now because the hutch looks so out of place.  My thought was to give it a fresh coat of white paint, maybe even add some black trim to some of the details?  And then get some colorful drawer pulls to replace the boring white ones it has now. Should I vamp up the yellow paint too?  Maybe stick with yellow, but a slightly bolder shade?

What do you think?

The room def isn't a hot mess!!  I would get some pillows in that same fabric & maybe replace the black candle holders with yellow ones.  Like these (I am still considering getting these):

I would give it a fresh coat of white & a bolder yellow like you said.  Maybe black pulls?  What about black trim like you are talking about doing in your kitchen?...OR it could look really good to replace that yellow area with your chair fabric!!

Or the fabric could go on the inside on the glass, but then you can't see what's inside.  Sorry, I may be totally crazy here LOL!

Mel- those candle holders are sooooooo adorable!!  And I like your ideas... yes, the black trim would look amazing, thanks for showing me!!  I saw it in my head, but sometimes it doesn't quite translate. :)

I have some china coming from my grandmother that we want to display in the hutch, so I want to keep the glass open.  But that does give me an idea!! Maybe I could find a cute scrappaper or wallpaper to add to the back instead of re-painting the yellow?  I have all those black frames I wanted to do that to, so maybe that would be a cute way to tie it all in... hmmmm... too many ideas!!

I was going to suggest something exactly like Plum, fabric/paper along the back, and color accents on the trim/handles.

It is a big piece of furniture, so I'm not sure how you feel about changing the color. But maybe making it yellow or gray would be fun and tie it in to the rest of the room? :-)

The nice thing about putting fabric or paper in is that it could be very temporary--tape or tiny finish nails, try it out for a couple of weeks, then change it if you don't like it. I bet you could find some pretty blue or yellow pulls somewhere as another alternative.

Anthropologie has a lot of cute knobs, both in clear glass and more opaque options.

I think a fresh coat of white paint, with painting the yellow a bit bolder would look good. I like LadyHope's idea of adding glass knobs - actually, I love it. I think glass knobs could add somme of that vintage charm it sounds like you were thinking it had.

You could buy new candlesticks, but did you consider spray painting the black ones you have?

I LOVE this and it's almost exactly like yours!  I love the paper backing on the shelves!  What a great piece of furniture to work with!

ha ha Debbie, before you even posted that grey hutch I told my hubby I wanted to add moulding to the top to give it some flavor!!  I LOVE that grey color... once we paint the walls grey (they are more of a cool beige shade right now), I'm not sure if it would be too much though?  Something to think about!!  I actually don't even mind the bird on it, one of the pillows I want has a bird on it and it really reminds me of that!!  I'd probably stick with solid though, and then do something fun to the inside!! :)

The moulding definitely gives it some jazziness. Other than that, it is really very similar to your hutch. Maybe you can do shades of gray? If you paint the wall a light gray, go with a darker gray for the hutch (or vice versa)? That way it still blends, but it gives the room some texture.
