Arranging flowers!

The day before my wedding I sat down with 3 coolers of flowers, and by myself, in the quietness of my apartment started making my bouquets for my wedding. It was SOO relaxing and for a few hours I didnt once think about the other million things to do on my wedding list! I REALLY wish I could start up a side business doing flowers! But...I have NO IDEA where to even start! Any on here ever done something like this? Any tips?

Thanks!

Mrs. HALL!

I don't have any tips for you really but I totally love the idea!!

I am always relaxed when doing things like that as well! Hopefully some other ladies know more about this sort of thing than I do!

sounds great, I love making arrangements with the flowers from my garden, its very relaxing!

however, This isn't to discourage you, I think its great you want to make this a buisness but I'm going to give it to you straight...here are some of the facts...

making an arrangement for yourself is one thing but as a business it can be very demanding. Most people are very picky about what they want for a wedding or special occasion and most people don't know the first thing about flowers....I would say you would probably get a lot of brides to be bringing you photos of bouquets and arrangements, or specific flowers, but not have any idea what the flowers are, when they are in season or  prices. You  have to be able to offer up an alternative flower on a whim to suit the brides budget, or depending on how hard it is to acquire the specific bloom.

I've been gardening for about 10 years now and i still have a lot to learn.

learning your flowers is step one ...did you know there are about 130 different species of roses? ranging in a variety of sizes, shapes, colors, smells and even petal amounts...and that's just roses!

Old English Roses

Eden Roses

Spray Roses

Tea Roses

Cottage Roses

just to name a few ...and then there is the "Rose of Sharron" which isn't even a rose at all...oh and though i know a lot, I don't know the scientific names, just the "common names" lol

It can be truly rewarding as a career if you decide to go ahead. An old friend of my mothers does it for a living, he does a lot of big deal occasions and he loves it...but it wasn't always that way, he had a mentor and worked his way up...it does take a lot of knowledge,..perhaps you can start by getting yourself a mentor and working as an assistant to start, have someone show you the ropes.

ooo and how could I forget?! over 35,000 species of orchids ...no that's not a typo lol they are the largest group but  OOO sooo pretty =) ....yes its a lot to learn, but learning the different flowers wont be such a daunting task if your passionate about it!

I'm happy to help ash ;O) GOOD LUCK!!!

She1........I am sitting here giggling because after I did my bouquets I had the same thought in my head! I could do this for other people no problem! However after reading your info....NO I COULDNT! LOL! Thank you for the info and it was right on the money about what other brides would be expecting!

ashle1738....Have you thought about opening an etsy store? You could randomly just make bouquets and sell them on your etsy site. If you make say like 10 different types of bouquets and post them and let brides order one of those and even in her own color then you are not receiving custom orders per say but just color variations of YOUR own creations. Make sense? Just a thought....

The thought entered my head for a brief moment in time as well mrsharris ;) I'm happy this info helped you and ash out! there is a ton of learning involved! as much as I LOVE flowers and gardening, I would rather learn bits and pieces as I go. Oh and I LOVE your idea about doing this on etsy! although, if your using fresh flowers, you must look into a refrigerated delivery service.

Hope you will find an easy way to start your own business. Good Luck with it!!!

My tip is to take a night course or two on flower arranging and then look into a night course on managing/running your own business. I'd lso suggest getting a wholesalers lisence (really cheap) so you can buy from large flower dealers!
