I don't like to use the term waste of money but rather, your money would be better spent on more quality glass. That lens is not particularly sharp and you might be rather disappointed with it after a fairly short period of time.

I used it for my trip to italy - it's a telephoto lens, but if you actually use it as such and zoomed all the way in, the subject was fuzzy and hazy. When I use my rebel, I still use the 17-55, but don't even bother with the 55-250. It's currently in my office functioning as a very expensive paperweight.

Hmmm, definately some things to think about. I'm definitely not able to afford the expensive lenses at this point, although I wish I was. The 55-250mm reviews on Amazon show an average customer review of 4.5 out of 5 from 424 people so that's why I thought it would be something to consider. I wish this lens stuff wasn't so confusing to a newbie like me!

Alliesauce & I each used the 18-135 3.5-5.6 for quite awhile & it was decent for a cheap, starter lens :)

Welcome! I have the Canon T2i and I have loved it! Although I am ready for an upgrade, I think it's an excellent starter camera, whether you're ever planning on shooting profressionally or if it's just a hobby. You'll enjoy it! I also have the 50mm 1.4 which is a great everyday lens.

Thank You so much slm, a lot of people have been recommending the 50 mm 1.4 to me.
