Lightning Near Portage Hurts Several In Park
PORTAGE, Mich. -- Police in Portage say lightning struck a park where children and adults were playing soccer, seriously injuring one person and sending about a half dozen others to the hospital.
WOOD-TV says emergency crews took the injured people to Bronson and Borgess hospitals.
A Portage police dispatcher told The Associated Press more information wasn't immediately available.
Police say those at the park were involved in a youth soccer program at Westfield Park in the city, which abuts Kalamazoo in southwestern Michigan.
The National Weather Service says the storms brought 1 inch hail and 50 mph wind gusts. The winds toppled two barns housing 40,000 turkeys in Allegan County's Salem Township.
