My dh and I are in the process of buying a home and for several reasons we have settled on an area in the suburbs. We currently live in the city (St Paul) and I'm a little nervous that our (future) kids will be the only ones with brown skin in our neighborhood. This area is 60% or so white and it is very common to see a mix of races in the city, but the burbs seem to be less mixed. I tried to look up the profile for one of the communities and it didn't include the racial breakdown. Anyone make this kind of move? How was it? Anything you wished you would have thought about before making the move? I've asked my dh and he's not very worried about it. Maybe I'm over thinking this....

We moved from the city to what I guess you call the suburbs but we havn't bought a house yet so its not permanent but I have the same concerns as you. Like how my (future) children will be treated in school. I wish I had advice for you. sorry.

Thanks, kristinamarie. We ended up going for it. The community we chose makes a lot of sense for us in terms of our commutes and we love the house that we are buying. We don't have kids yet so we won't be thinking about schools for a while and my hope is that we will find some folks in the community who are more similar to us. The reality is that we would need to think about race and our kids in any neighborhood, which is something that we're trying to be prepared for.
