For the gals that changed their names, did you guys have to get a court order?  The website says that you can sometimes just go to the DMV and SS office to ask them to change it (by showing your marriage license/certificate) but that they might still ask you for a court order.  The court order seems like a gigantic PITA and I'd rather not have to do that if I can help it. :/

Never heard of a court order. All I needed was the marriage license. I took care of my stuff in Redwood City and all was fine. Maybe is varies from county to county?

I think the court order is only needed if you don't have a marriage certificate or a divorce decree. All I brought to SS (the first stop) was the marriage certificate and there were no issues at all. It only took 10 minutes. The DMV just asked if I changed it at and SS (didn't ask for proof) and changed it. HTH!

Awesome!  The site made it sound so much more complicated.  I hate red tape!

you shouldn't need that as long as you stated on your marriage license what your new last name will be....if you chose not to change it at that time, when you got the license, then you might need further documentation....

You need to get a copy of your marriage licence, take it to the SSA first along with your passpaort and DL then to the DMV. They will ask you for your passport, marriage licence and (DL - I told them i lost it becuase i wante to keep it)

good luck!
