Ah, you said tan and fall in the same paragraph :) As a designer, if you are going to do a fall/beach them (and stay with me here), Tan gives you a wonderful palette to build upon. Or Cream/Ivory as well. If you do a fall mix theme, you could really make use of a ton of colors... orange, brown, teal, lime, lemon yellow, fuscia, pink, darker reds... It could go either way. and it would still be beach friendly.

You can go beach theme with the Navy Blue too though.. I would mix in lighter blues throughout the wedding with seashells, starfish... Navy mixes very well with lighter blues.  You could also add plenty of creams, whites or lavenders. Have you thought about what kind of flowers you like? Roses are best for color matching as they come in a variety of shades. But you can find other flowers to mix with any theme you choose as well.

The dress I'm wearing in my picture (to the left) is a navy dress from Jcrew that I wore when I was a BM in my friend's wedding. I thought everyone looked so great and it was very appropriate---not a beach wedding either. I'm a big fan of navy---so many colors pop against it.

Oh, and by the way, that wedding I wore the navy dress in, was a fall wedding and she used beautiful rich fall colors---burnt orange, red, pinks, etc..

I decided to go with Navy Blue for my bridesmaids and I think it will be very nice and elegant.

Navy blue is beautiful and elegant. And it looks good on just about anyone. I don't know what fabric you are thinking of, but for a beach wedding it would look really nice in a jersey knit. They do some really beautiful gowns in that fabric that don't look casual but are really comfy.
