Ok Ladies:)

I need some much needed help.

FFI is wanting to join the AF Reserve or Guard. Our problem is which one?

If any of you have any advise or information would be awesome.

Just a little history. We've talked to every enlisted recruiter known to mankind, or atleast it feels like it. He's set on the AF for various reasons. Did a little over a year as and AFROTC cadet in college.

TIA

if he's not going to go full time he should go reserve. Here's why: guard is state run and state funded and only when he is deployed it he considered federal governement therefore regardless of what the guard recruiter says if they say he's going to get a bonus he will only get it if there are funds available and in this economy states are going broke left and right. With reserve he's run by the federal government and is pretty much gauranteed anything they say he'll get. FI is an Army recruiter so let me know if you have questions i can ask him he's all for helping out anyone with any questions they might have. Also, keep in mind that the AF is majorly overloaded right now so chance of him getting exactly what he wants is slim to none if he can get in anytime soon at all and if he goes active he's not gauranteed his job until he graduates bootcamp whereas as with reserve he is. I was AF reserve so trust me on this one. hope this helps and good luck! pm if you have anymore questions.

Thank you Hurley!!:) I'll read this to FFI when he wakes up-he works night shift- and see if he has any questions.

We're not to worried about bonus or anything like that. We currently live in south GA and are wanting to move to Texas soon. One of the things that is leaning him more towards the guard is that it is with the state also, and the tuition assistance is awesome. 12 hours for up to 15 semesters/5 years 100% paid.

Reserves has all that and better security of funding. The Air National Guard is basically the Air Reserve's competition and so the recruiters will tell you anything they think you want to hear to get you to sign with them. Basically, they are one and the same as far as commitment(one weekend and month 2 weeks a year + deployments) but the reserves has to upperhand in like I said they are federal government and not state run ie: gaurantee of money allocated for things like education and bonuses. You will be able to choose your base in Texas based on the job he gets and the availability they have on that particular base just like you are able to with the guard.
