I've been lurking for a while now, lol.  I don't even know where to start.  I've always loved photography, I LOVE taking pictures.  I just don't have a heavy duty camera yet and would just do this as a hobby.  

Can anyone recommend where to start?

Canon and Nikon DSLR's are where to start - it all depends on what you're wanting to do. I'm just a newbie myself so I don't have too much to add. I just shoot basic pictures of my family and pets and I have a Canon Rebel T2i and it's great for what I need it for but I've heard people grow out of it quickly - I've yet to do that lol

I'd say go to a camera store and play around with them, how they feel, the buttons and see what you like. Then do your research. Google will be your best friend :)

I am new to it as well - I just got a Nikon D3100 and have started reading books and playing around with it - I am loving it so far!

While I can't help you in your area with classes, a lot of photographers in my area offer workshops to help beginners :)

Thanks ladies!! I plan on shopping for one this Sunday! Yay me! I looked around and seen some local Community College classes that offer photography classes. Hopefully they are offering something good :)
