One of our charge nurses has been irritating me too lately! Our night-shift (the staff RNs do 12-hours shifts) charge nurses make the nursing assignment for the next shift and visa-versa.
Well, as the CNS for the TICU and MICU I'm responsible for the care we give our patients, nurse education, a bunch of stuff, when there's really sick patients I am in the room all day helping the nurses if they need it - ect ect
Anyway, I walk in last week and the charge nurse had assigned one of my newer nurses the sickest patient in the unit - which she needed the experience of caring for with me and other strong staff nurses there to help - but she also gave her the
open trauma bed....W...T...F - so now it's 8AM and guess what?? There's a sick trauma admission to come to the unit.
This crap happens all the time - so now I have one of the nurses with a stable 2-patient assignment give up a super stable patient to the nurse with the super sicky and that other nurse then admits the new one - this could have all been avoided
had the charge RN just given the sicky to her with another stable patient (there were plenty to choose from in the unit that day). She was pissed and I don't blame her...arrrggg...that's my vent for this week.
