NWR: I hate making decisions!

So, today I was offered another job! Yay, but scary. I can't make decisions and I don't know if I should take it or not. There's another job opening that sounds a lot better, but there are so many unknowns about it, not to mention that my resume won't be read until the day I have to tell the other place if I'll take the job or not.

How do you guys make big big BIG decisions?

trust yourself. and KNOW that whatever happens, you'll make the best outcome. I always know, even if I screw up, that I can fix it. I've earned that trust in myself. Just take a look at all the other decisions you've ever made; and once you begin to see what successes you've created, you'll trust yourself too : )

Are they offering you a contract before you give notice to your current position? I don't really understand what you mean by "not to mention that my resume won't be read until the day I have to tell the other place if I'll take the job or not." Does that mean you have to leave your current job before they'll give a final answer? Because if they've made an offer it should be solid along with a written contract stating your salary etc etc.

theDame is right, if contracts etc are squared away you have to trust your gut. Do you like the people you work with now, are there opportunities for growth (I recall a past post saying no?) and what kind of vibe are you getting from the new firm? Have you interviewed with them? Have you interviewed with many people? Remember you are interviewing them too so if you are still not sure, tell their HR, "I'm really excited about my offer and am looking forward to being part of your firm but before I give my final answer is it possible to sit down with a few more people?" The usually will do this for you because they want you to be a happy worker bee too!

When I'm stuck between big choices, I make a pro/con list. It may sound lame, but sometimes processing it and putting on paper can bring clarity. First MoeMarsita, be sure that you have all the ends and outs of the new job before jumping. I'm all for new opportunity, but the grass often seems to be greener on the other side.

thedame--I don't trust myself! haha. I guess usually in big decisions I can see the pros and cons clearly, but this time they're so blurred! But you're right that it's always fixable.

champagne--Sorry for being confusing. Where I work now is pretty much a dead end, but it's comfortable. I interviewed twice for the job offer I got today. It's a kinda boring job though, but benefits, growth, etc. is better than where I am now. Shortly after I interviewed for the job I was offered today, I found out about another job that sounds like it suits me much better. A person I know was planning on leaving the position and put my resume in, but the boss was going out of the country for two weeks. The boss comes back the same day that I have to decide about the new job. So taking the job offer or taking the risk to get a job that suits me better--that's where I am drawing a blank.

nicks--I've made the list, but it doesn't "speak" to me. Maybe it will tomorrow when I've calmed down a bit. I definitely don't want to make a mistake when it comes to greener grass.

Oh! This has happened to me before. Unless Firm A (offer firm) has given you what they call an "exploding offer" then you can ask for more time. An exploding offer is basically when they say that if you haven't made up your mind by that date, they will have to cancel all negotiations. I don't know what you do for a living but these types of offers are very common on wall street. If this is not the case, ask for a little extra time and talk to Firm B. Or you can always interview with Firm B and ask Firm A for a trial period where you work for them. Or just agree to work for Firm A and interview with Firm B... I am personally not one to do this but I know many bankers who have and it seems to work for them.

its hard to step out of your comfort zone.I cant give you on advice on what to do...because I am dealing with the samething right now....what I can tell you is if you are not happy 100% where you are at,and if you dont see yourself there in the future...DONT DO NOTHING. Change is the scariest thing in the world for me,and thats why I find myself stuck in routine,just doing things because I am comfortable. I dont think it is very good for your selfesteem to not try because your afraid it will fail or worse,that you will fail. Good luck I know whatever choice you make it will be one that makes you happy...and even if that choice isnt what makes you happy your next one will....because you'll know what not to do :)

Moemarsita, calm down, then listen to your intuition! Deep down you probably know already what's right for you, you just need to hear it, coming from yourself. If something's bothering you about the offer and the job, perhaps your intuition is trying to tell you something. I know how hard these decisions are, but what usually works for me is to calm down and then dig deep into what I really want :) Good luck!

Whatever happens, it is not a question of life and death, it's a job. You can always quit it and find a new one. So cheer up - choices are hard to make, but it sounds you are in an exciting situation, you have options, and you have the chance to get to know yourself and what you really want!

I'm a writer/designer, so I would have to start at Company A when they asked because the new publication has to get out on time. I would just hate to be trained for the new publication at Company A to then go somewhere else and them start the process all over.

You ladies are the absolute best! I think my mind is getting a little clearer and I'll keep you all updated. :)
