Okay - I am sitting here with the volume on my T.V blasted, my ITUNES blasted...

New neighbors have moved in at the beginning of the month, they are really nice, have two kids - 3yr old and 7 months.  We live in a very old house, which I am thinking there is like NO INSULATION between floors, which means I hear EVERYTHING.  Prior to me blasting my music - I was listening to 10 minutes of running & jumping (hard) back and forth of the entire livingroom/bedroom (of my floor).

I don't want to be "that neighbor", but I can't deal with it.  I have noise issues where I can't tune stuff out and I don't want to have to leave my house, but I also don't want to be "that neighbor"....

Does anyone have any suggestions??  I know I am going to have to say something if I can't deal, but what do I say!?!?!?!?

TIA!

Hmm, how about you bring them cookies to welcome them (kill them with kindness) and then mention nicely that the walls here are super thin and if they could keep the kids from running and jumping to a minimal. Geesh, I'm really bad at this!! Haha, I don't know what I would even do in your situation!

thanks iklein - its just me & them....:)

sandp09 - my FI thinks I am nuts (but seriously I have a hugh noise issue and I can't block crap out!!!)  It's bad.. I mean my cats are constantly looking up at the ceiling - and forget about when they roll stuff around on the floor hahahah..

check this (its not gross, but I had to put a spin of humor on it!) - so...the old neighbors that lived here had a 2 year old boy and in the mornings, when I would get up and go to the bathroom (pee & then start shower) I could hear the dad and his son..."Onnnnnneeeeee, Twwwwoooooooo, Threeeeeeeeeee, Yay!!!!!...and I would laugh, so I was telling my mom about it and said while their counting 1, 2, & 3, I'm going 1 &2.... - Sorry! ahhahahah

Well, to be honest, I'm not sure you should complain about noise in the middle of the day, if it is in the evening or early morning, then I think you have a valid complaint. If you work from home, try some noise cancelling headphones (I love Ultimate Ears). Maybe do like SandP said and take up cookies and see if you can see if they have thick carpets on their floors, if not, maybe talk to your landlord about insisting that the people put thick carpets down to muffle the noises. Sorry. Loud neighbors are a huge bummer

I have issues with noise too, (I sleep with earplugs) and I can't imagine what it's like dealing with the noise. But at the same time, what can your neighbor do? Kids will be kids and Mom or Dad can't keep them strapped down all day.

My BFF is currently on the other end of this dilemma. They moved into an upstairs apartment and they have a 2 year old. Their downstairs neighbor works from home and has complained repeatedly that it sounds like train is running through the apartment whenever their toddler is running around... and since he's 2, it's alot. He also pounds on his ceiling whenever the 2 year old has a tantrum. It totally sucks because my BFF is looking for a job and they'll put the toddler in day care when she gets a job, but until then, she's home with the kid... and she can't do laundry or vacuum during the day because it pisses off the downstairs neighbor. The last time he complained, she actually told him, "why don't you ask my son to be quiet, see if it works. He's 2 for goodness sake." He doesn't complain anymore, instead he's just become to guy who pounds on the ceiling from time to time.

I know it's probably not what you wanted to hear, but sometimes you just have deal with it the best you can. Perhaps do what SandP09 mentioned and bring over some cookies and introduce yourself. Mention that the sound insulation is terrible in the house and it gets pretty loud when the kids are running around. It can be a friendly way to let them know, "I can totally hear you!"

Good luck!

Its 7:30 here in NJ - and it goes on until 930....so it's definitely not the day...and its SUMMER, so just imagine during the winter when its too cold out for them to play...

We do plan on having a little bbq and invite them down - like I said they haven't been here a month, so ringing their doorbell and saying hey can u kick it down a notch is something I want to avoid (but also being the a-hole neighbor blaring music lol)...

Abatty - definitely get your point that's why I feel bad...ya dig?  They are kids! :) it is just the constant bam, bam, bam, bam, jump jump jump jump, I'd have to go outside or leave but anywhoo...

I'm a good neighbor, I looked up train schedules for him to get back into the city and told him garbage days, etc (when I moved here my neighbors never told us jack) lol

Thanks all - I guess this is more of a frustrated vent :)

I agree with Sandp also.  As the mother of small boys I know how hard it is to keep them quiet.  My downstairs neighbors are not home during the day so I don't really have to woory about the noise but once it's 6pm we walk don't run.  Maybe you can let her know that you need to get some work done and you need it to be a little more quiet during certain hours.  Sorry, I really don't know what to say.

ok, well it sounds like you are doing the right thing by being nice. I would highly suggest you check into their carpet situation, a thick rug can really make a huge difference
