OB-GYN question

Ok so I'm kinda embarressed even saying this, but I haven't been to the Gynecologist since I was 13 years old. And at 13 they didn't really do anything because I wasn't sexually active yet. So that's 8 years I haven't gone. I just received health insurance from my job, so I scheduled an appointment for next week and I'm really nervous lol.

It's not so much that I'm nervous about the exam, but more about what the doctors reaction will be to me wanting nothing to do with birth control. It's a personal thing, I don't like to take pills (I barely even take advil for headaches) I feel like I would forget to take them, and my family has a horrible history of getting pregnant within 2 months of getting on birth control.

SO what I'm asking is if anyone else is in my boat. How did your doc react when you said no to birth control? My mom highly recommended this doc and so I'm hoping she respects that, but I really don't feel like getting lectured lol.

Thanks

i've never used BC either and to avoid getting lectured, i would just say that i always use condoms.  it really depends on the dr, too.  i have had dr's that ask me if i need BC and i say no and end of story.  then there are others that probe me further when i say i dont need BC.

GL at the appt.  I don't have any advice really because I've always been on the pill (I have to be on it because I have endometriosis).  But your Dr should be ok with whatever method you decided you are using for pregnancy prevention (or if you choose to not prevent either).  There are lots of reliable options out there, hormonal and non-hormonal, if you are looking to not get pregnant.  She should be able to tell you about any you have questions about or answer any questions about trying to get pregnant.

Thanks ladies!

We aren't trying to prevent it at this time, but we aren't really TTC either for another year. I have really abnormal periods so I'm hoping she can sort that out for me too! I had one in Feb, June, and October. It's been pretty weird. And they are always super short and light

Gotcha.  Yeah, she should be able to help you out with that.  And I think the no BC shouldn't be a big deal either.  I'm sure it's not that rare for couples to not prevent for a little while before they actually TTC.

Yeah Hearts don't let a doctor push you into something you aren't comfortable with: I don't take BC anymore because I don't like that they are artificial hormones and that it increases your risk for breast cancer. . .ugh.  No thanks.

I'd rather get an accidental baby than breast cancer, kwim?  :)  Since breast cancer runs in my family it's a concern for me, maybe an 'over the top' concern, but I don't care.

Tell the doctor that you haven't been in for an exam in a while - he's not going to chastise you for it if he's professional and should understand and be gentle and tell you what he's doing so you are comfortable.  And personally, if I had a doctor that was being a PITA about my PERSONAL decision to not you BC pills, than I would switch. . . .

YOU are ultimately in control of your body and what you do, not him :)

I actually told them when I made my appt that I wanted to get on it then she asked me again when I was in the room. If I would've said no I really don't think they would've cared. Most docs are professional and don't get into your personal life...or shouldn't!

the doctor shouldn't care if you say NO to the pill they may just ask if you want to know about other options, ask why you deceided against the pill.. he/she shouldn't really get to agressive in pushing the issue, just letting you know other options and if you are interested they are there to explain them.
The nuva ring is great, low hormones and you don't have to remember every day.... (if you want BC at all...
another thing I was thinking after reading your one responce was if your period is very un-normal and out of control as you say, the doc may suggest you go on the pill for a few months to try and regulate your period. You may very well say no but be aware that this is a very high option when periods are irregular. Not sure what other options the doc would have in this case. But thats something to know if the doc pushes toward the pill at all. Do not let them walk over you about this. You can say no and that means No.. so Hope all goes well.. and just relax as much as possible..
good luck and best wishes
