Orange Juice in the AM?

I think it was in 'Nutrition for a Healthy Pregnancy' that I read it is recommended to have a glass of orange juice (made from concentrate) every morning.  Anyone else heard of this?

I'm assuming it has to do with the folate/folic acid, but if I'm taking prenatals and foods that contain it should I try to incorporate the fruit juice?  I just don't drink a ton of fruit juice - I'll either make a smoothie or eat raw fruit, and 90% of the time I'm drinking water (the other times it is usually milk).

Actually, it seems like it's also valued for it's high vitamin C and potassium (as well as calcium if you buy that kind) content. Check out these articles:

Of course if you're getting those things from other foods, I don't see why you would need to include it. Seems like it's just a convenient source for most people:)

Some things to remember about vitamins - even the ones you get from food - your body can only absorb so much in a single intake.  That may be why it is recommended that you drink OJ in the morning, for all the benefits littlebit listed, as well as absorbing some in the morning, and some from other foods/your prenatal later - even in your prenatal vitamin you probably don't absorb everything because your body has a maximum uptake limit....

please remember also that in a Vitamin you are intaking synthetic forms of nutrition, and your body has a harder time absorbing and processing these as it would true whole food nutritiont that you would get from a whole food supplement or simply by eating a well balanced diet of true whole foods:)

That is actually not the case with Folic Acid vs. Folate - your body more readily absorbs Folic Acid than it does Folate - folate has to be broken down into folic acid by your body.....  As with other vitamins, I'd have to look them up individually because I don't remember off the top of my head.  But I can also tell you that some people cannot absorb B-12 from their food - I am one of them.  Using a sublingual supplement, my B-12 levels are normal per my blood tests, they were not when I was just getting it from my diet - and trust me, I eat a TON of fruits and vegetables.
