Can anyone help me make sense of this?

R10) 10sc, dec, 4sc, dec, 4sc, dec, 6sc (33)

I get what each mean, but how does one get to 33 stitches from that combo?  Unless the dec count as stitches?

Here's the rest of the pattern if that helps:

R1) magic ring 6 (6)
R2) inc in each sc (12)
R3) *1sc, inc* 6 times (18)
R4) *2sc, inc* 6 times (24)
R5) *3sc, inc* 6 times (30)
R6) *4sc, inc* 6 times (36)
R7-9) sc in each sc around (36)
*attach eyes and nose. stitch mouth using embroidery thread and tapestry needle*
R10) 10sc, dec, 4sc, dec, 4sc, dec, 6sc (33)
R11) sc in each sc around (33)
R12) 10sc, inc, 4sc, inc, 4sc, inc, 6sc (36)
R13-15) sc in each sc around (36)
R16) *4sc, dec* 6 times (30)
R17) *3sc, dec* 6 times (24)
*stuff your mameshiba*
R18) *2sc, dec* 6 times (18)
R19) *1sc, dec* 6 times (12)
R20) dec until closed

Have you gotten any help with this?  I was trying to figure it out, but having a hard time.

LOL, thanks for the reply Becca!

I haven't, but since it goes from a 36-stich round to a 33-stitch round, I just figured it meant that there should be 3 dec's and that the numbers of sc were off.  That's what I did and it looks kind of ok for now. LOL.

Sorry I wasn't on this group sooner!

R10) 10sc, dec, 4sc, dec, 4sc, dec, 6sc (33)

This means for Row #10 - 10 single crochets, decrease by 1 stitch, 4 more single crochets, decrease another stitch, 4 more single crochets, decrease again, 6 more single crochets.

How do you decrease?  I was never really taught, I just watched my mom and copied what she did.  : )  I have had no "formal" teaching.

@ beccabride : here is the basic concept of decreasing (dec)- do two or more stitches within one step of completion then draw through all loops on hook, or you can skip stitches.

Most patterns will specify how to decrease ie. "sc dec over next 2 sc"

Decreases can also be done when working with a double crochet: dc dec (or dc2tog)- Work a dc in the next stitch withoutcompleting the very last step (leave the last two loops on the hook), thendc in the next stitch without completing the last step. You should havethree loops on the hook then yarn over and draw through all the loops. Decrease made.

all info found here: http://www.crochetnmore.com/123basics.htm

Hope that helps :)

@Siouxzan: thanks! I figured out in the end that the number of stitches must have been wrong (there was no way to get 33 stitches from that combination).  But thanks again!

@becca: if your mom showed you how to decrease, then you should be fine!  You basically just "skip" over a stitch.  But I prefer invisible decreases that don't leave gaping holes in my piece.

Invisible Decrease for right-handers

Before we begin:
Siouxzan thanks I figured photo 3325678-1

Insert the hook into the front loop of the first stitch (2 loops on hook). DO NOT YARN OVER:

Insert the hook into the front loop of the next stitch. To do this, you’ll need to swing the hook down first so you can insert the hook under the front loop. (3 loops on hook):

Swing hook down…

…then up through the front loop of the next stitch

Yarn over and draw through the first two loops on the hook. (2 loops on hook):

Yarn over and draw through both loops on the hook. Invisible decrease completed:

Now let’s play a game: spot the decrease…

From here.  There's also a leftie version if you're a leftie.
