I was in the car on the way home last night and heard an ad on the radio that the University of Colorado Medical School was doing a study on PCOS.  And they were looking for qualified participants... if you qualify, you get all of your care for free!!  I called them and left a message to see what the deal is.  Would you participate in a study like this?  Why or why not?

I just got off the phone with the girl from University of Colorado Medical School… basically the study is 5 months long after you qualify.  They would put you on either Clomid, or this other drug that is FDA approved (it’s approved for 3 other conditions, but not PCOS yet), we wouldn’t know which medication I was taking.  And they track you to see what your results are with whichever medication you were randomly selected to take.  In order to participate, I would have to take 2 months off from taking any meds- so no Premarin, Provera, or Clomid for 2 months before I could participate.... hmmm, not sure what to think?

Would you be compensated?  My biggest thing would be if it interfered with work during the week and how often they needed to see me and if it was convenient for me.  Being that I'm going to be 34 this year I probably wouldn't but if I was a few years younger maybe as long as I could do research and know what the other medication was.

I think your compensation is free care/medication, but that's it...

This is totally your call!  I'm always interested in medical studies b/c I would love to help out women in my situation down the road, but ONLY IF I knew the medication's side effects (short and long term), and that it was already FDA approved or at least has been shown to be safe in other countries.  Also, do you think that not taking anything for 2 months will mess with your body?  I'm thinking of your last AF... just want to make sure you are not whacking out your system by going off meds...

See, that's the issue DH has with it too.  He's like "you know what's gonna happen, you will go off the meds and have another period for 2 months"... it really messed with me so badly last time!  I can't remember the name of the other medication.  And, like I said, it is FDA approved for 3 other medical conditions, just not PCOS yet.  So I guess that is what they are trying to determine; if it will work for PCOS too.

I had my Dr. appointment and started Clomid last night, so I'm just gonna give this cycle a try and see what happens.  My Dr. was telling me about patients in his office that he's treated with Clomid, he's had several sets of twins and triplets!  Could you imagine?!?  I know it wouldn't happen, but it's crazy to think about!
