there are artists that will take a photo of you in your dress, showing the details of the dress that you love the most, and turn that into art.  often they even use actual beads to creat similar beading on the canvas to mimic actual beadwork on your dress.  if your dress was lace, they start by covering the canvas in lace.  below is the link to one such artist.

the other project is a shadow box

i personally really love the artwork of the dress cause you can keep that and your pics to remember your dress and give the dress to charity.  i watch tv and see brides who dont want to wear their moms dress and dont have the guts to tell them that the dress isnt their style.  yes the dress may be able to be turned into something else, but if you had a mermaid lace gown and your daughter wants a ball gown with no lace your dress isnt gonna help.  why guilt her into wearing something she will regret later.  keep a momento of the dress via the art and say goodbye.

another option:

i have heard of someone making a baptism or commitment dress for their children from their wedding gown.  that is kinda neat.

2 1/2yrs later and I still haven't made my shadow box. I'm keeping my dress and letting my daughter use it as she pleases when it comes time for her wedding. I'm also going to have pics taken of her in my dress this Sept when she turns 2 for DH as an anniversary gift. I think it would be cute!
