Can someone please tell me if there is a difference in the two colours.

Hi.  There are sooo many shades of purple!  I think of the "purple" like a grape color while plum is more like eggplant color.  I think it's all a matter of opinion.  I was saying my colors are eggplant and ivory, but after seeing the ideas of others, now I just say different shades of purple.

diitto GH- purple is more bright (lakeresque) while plum is darker, deeper eggplant.
