Having worked in the jewelry industry, and having a beautiful setting to take care of myself, I can say you should NOT use any kind of soap. It will leave a residue and dull stones quickly. If you do, make sure it's rinsed well with warm water.
Ammonia free windex is great for a quick fix or for removing a stuck ring. Never use lotion for removal as it will leave a residue as well. The cleaner in the red jar is great by the way! Not sure about the vodka thing, but if it doesn't work, I'm
sure it can be put to other uses... ;0)
If you do have a white gold ring (all are rhodium plated) and take it to the jeweler make sure they don't polish as that will remove the plating. Ultrasonic cleaner and steamer is the best. Most jewelers will do this for free as well as check
the stones. For best results, I take mine in for a professional (free) clean and checkup every two-three months.
One final bit of advice is too keep the ring at home or in a jewelry bag while at the gym too in order to avoid dings or scratches caused by metal on weights and sweat build up.
Mine has all sorts of nooks and crannies to clean so I like a soft bristle brush as well. Here's the engagement ring. Still in perfect condition after 5 yrs. (knock on wood!)
