Looks nice and I love the idea of the bride making her own wedding cake. But let's be serious: no filling, no crumbcoating, every layer a different thickness and the frosting AFTER assembling the layers?!... it would be good for a tea party with friends but certainly not for a wedding! And I don't think a couple of toothpicks can hold the weight of that cake for a long time... Even if you're ok with not filling the cake, you should always crumbcoating and frosting the layers BEFORE putting them together.

I think it was great of her to make her own cake and to take the time to write this up to help us other brides out. I am DIYing my wedding cake and I hope that afterwards I can incourage and help other brides to make their own. Not everyone has the same ideas or thoughts but every idea should be appriciated

I think it's beautiful! I'm a frosting girl and would have frosted between layers, but some people prefer more cake.

Angellyca, the perfect wedding cake is in the eye of the couple. Don't rain on their parade just because you want something different.

wonder if they make chocolate pound cake. this is nice and simple, and has a nice rustic look.  

I don't understand something about those who object to this brides cake?  Why do you even care it's not your cake and if she was happy with it then so be it.  We've been brainwashed into thinking something has to be a certain way or it's wrong.  Really?  If a bride wants to serve hostess cupcakes at her wedding that is her business. Tacky but it is still her business! lol  No one was asking you to have that cake at your wedding.

Beautiful and the perfect cake.  To those bridezillas who had to put it down, get a life, if it is not for your fine but do not put down someone else's dream or perfect cake. We have been so indoctorinated as to what we "should have" we loose sight that there are some people, myself included who do not need a three tiered marzipan and raspberry filled cake with smooth nonedible fondant icing made by some swanky bakery that was way over priced.  CAKES DO NOT HAVE TO BE FILLED NOR DO THEY HAVE TO COME FROM A BAKERY!

 My now husband made ours for the wedding.  Did they look "perfect" hell no, the fondant wasn't smooth, but you know what I didn't care and still to this date do not care.  Just the fact that he took the time before our wedding to bake 5 heart shaped red velvet cakes and make his infamous edible marshmallow fondant icing made them perfect for me and for our wedding.  He is going to bake a smaller one for our one year anniversary. 

So to all the diy brides out there, first congratulations on your upcoming nuptials, take time out of your busy day to enjoy yourself, trust me you won't remember most of what happened anyway, and second if you have the time and talent to make your own cake then why not.  Not everyone wants a three tired marizpan and raspberry filled torte cake with nonedible fondant icing.  If you do, thats great but do not knock those of us that dont.

I think after reading all of these comments it is a pity that some of us are so petty. To each is own. Calling someone a bridezilla after they make somewhat uncalled for remarks about the article makes you both wrong. I would never bake my own cake because I don't have the time nor the skill set to create a cake for my wedding. But to those who can or are willing to try, that is wonderful. Different ideas, preferences, cultures, etc. make the world interesting and unique. Regardless of the cost of your wedding, every bride wants her day to be special. Snarky comments are entirely uncalled for, this is a wesbite of information for brides to be, not a dictation of what your wedding should be. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and everyone's opinion should be respected ! =) 

BTW, I am going Sylvia Weinstock for our wedding at the Mandarin Oriental NYC, anyone using her make sure it is in your contract to not have a frozen cake. For that matter any cake you order should not be a frozen cake, it really compromises the taste. Many bakers do this for convenience!
