I got my teeth whitened at the dentist and just wanted to warn everyone that has sensitive teeth that it can be PAINful.  You have to have all of your cavities filled first before they will do the procedure.  I couldn't even finish the 3rd 15-minute session--I was shaking, my gums were receded and looked burned, I had a sore (burning from the peroxide) on my lip, and I couldn't eat hard food for a few days.  It was like having braces all over again! If you are sensitive I would suggest bringing Orajel, ice, cold water, aspirin, chapstick, and maybe even have someone drive you home. 

fi had his teeth whitened at the dentist too and he was in pain!  they didn't do a good job because they got the peroxide on his lips. poor thing, his lips were swollen and burning...and on top of that, like you mentioned, his teeth were SUPER sensitive and hurt like heck for at least a week.

The sensitivity and soreness/uncomfortable factor completely depends on the whitening procedure you choose.  You can get the Zoom whitening from a dentist in one hour, with no soreness or sensitivity.  Or order the whitening trays, which take a couple weeks, but are very effective with minimal sensitivity, and I haven't had any gum soreness.  Just be sure to do your research.
