We're having a beach wedding spring 2011.  We love reggae music so we have contemplated having a reggae band.  We think it would be fun, high energy, and keep within the theme and feel of our wedding...

What are your thoughts?  Pros/Cons?

Thanks!

Bands tend to be more expensive, so if you choose one, be prepared for that.

We had a DJ because I preferred it over a band. I wanted to hear the songs I love by the artists that originally sang them!

Missie1284 - Thanks for your comment :)  Yes, we have looked at the cost and that isn't a factor for us.  We love live music and have heard a particular reggae band play in our area that we love... we just aren't sure what others would think of us having a reggae band.  We would want them to play some classic songs as well as reggae, so there would be a good mix...

I think most people like reggae..it especially goes with the beach theme.  if its in your budget you might also want to consider a reggae band for a couple hours and then a dj for the later part of the night.

That is a great idea, different, and something that accommodates everyone. Depending on the band too, it can make or break the reception. I have seen some that are just a ton of fun, get people involved and are very enjoyable, then others that make you wish you had a dj. Maybe just look around and keep a look out and if you find a great one, maybe just negotiate on price. That is a great and different unique idea.

BellaBride79 - I was actually thinking of doing that.. just not sure.  My main concern was the first dance song(s), etc.  I don't think a band would replicate those songs well.  So an option would to get a d.j. for the first half and then hire the reggae band for the last half... but I'm not sure :)  If anyone has done this please let me know how it worked out for you!

Mariboberry - Thanks!  I am positive the band we're considering having will knock the socks off our guests... they are that good :)

How long is your reception? as much as I love reggae music, I don't know if I can listen to it for 4 hours. Make sure that the band can play some other music as well.

Personally, I would choose a band over a DJ - especially if you have no cost issues. There's just something about that energy between a live band and the audience that you just can't get with some guy getting paid to press the "play" button.

Thanks Soifelion!  I completely understand about not wanting to hear reggae for 4 hours :) This is the type of feedback I wanted to hear (oddly enough)... I just want to get a good feel of what the majority would want to listen to.  I'm not sure how long our reception will be... it's a ways away right now, but I'm having a sunset ceremony on the beach so it will be a later reception probably ending around midnight.  I am thinking of doing both d.j. and band.. if we can swing the cost.  I am also going to meet with the band prior to deciding to book of course and let them know I want other songs played aside from reggae songs.
