Do you remember giving your first shot?  I only ask because I gave my very first one today and I am beyond ecstatic!!!!  I had about ten people in my patient's room (some were fellow students watching).  I was so excited to give it that I could care less who was in there!!!  How about the first time you put in a catheter or the first time you put in an IV.  Share your stories!!!

OMG I only gave flu shots when I was in school and my first IM shot was after I was working in ICU as a new grad - we rarely give anything but subcutaneous or IV in the ICU but this dude was flipping out and had pulled out his IVs - security was holding him down and I gave him IM ativan - it was crazy.

My first few IVs (we're not allowed to insert IVs in nursing school in NJ) were on intubated, sedated patients, thanks goodness - great practice without the pressure of your patient staring at you.

I am VERY nervous for my fist IV. I have the same thing as Jessie-- in school we aren't allowed to give them.

As for shots, my first was a SubQ Lovenox on a Maternity floor after mom had a c-section. I was so excited to do it because it was only my Second semester, and I was one of the first people to do it in my program.

I havent done a foley, but I was at a SCI hospital for PEDS rotation and I did a ton of stray caths during that time. It was great practice because (like Jessies, IVs) they coudln't feel a thing.

My school also did not allow us to initiate IVs:( I began starting IVs one year ago and love doing them! It's a great little challenge to find that one small hidden vein that will accept your needle:)

I remember one of the first IVs I did was on an older gentleman who was a mechanic with super thick skin. The IV went in but when I went to remove the needle and hook up the line I couldn't get good compression on the vein above the cannula so he bleed all over his linen and onto the floor!! Of course it wasn't alot but looked like it. His wife was watching to boot! We all chuckled about it and he laughed even more when I said I had only started 2-3 before his:)

Being the ER now is so different then the med/surg floor. On med surg we used mainly SC and IV(minibag) for meds. In the ER we always use IM for injection and IV push for meds. The Nurses think I'm cute because I always ask how fast to push meds:) "As fast as you can!!"

My first IM was at a flu clinic last year. This year I am in my final med-surg rotation and I had my first IV in the ED along with my first foley...I can't believe that some schools don't let you start IV's...that would make me so nervous starting as a new nurse not having practiced that skill!

My very very first was in class, but my first 'real' shot was to a 3 y/o :-(  It sucked.  It was rocephin.   I felt so bad for the little guy.

Apple - OUr school didn't teach us IVs because the health authority for our town had IV teams at each hospital so they found it pointless to teach nurses how to do them when they would not be doing them in practice, unless they worked on the IV team:(

I wasn't nervous at all with starting them in practice. My new hospital simple incorporated it into my orientation:)

I can't wait to start IV's.  We learn it next semester in our Med-Surg rotation.  I'm very excited for them!

My first IM shot was in school.  I gave Demerol in the butt.  I've probably only done less than 20, we don't really give IM shots.

I can't remember my first SQ shot since we always do this.

I remember my first IV insertion.  It was on a patient who's old line wasn't working.  I was new at the hospital that I currently work at now.  That was my biggest fear.  Now I loooove doing IV insertions.  I love the challenge if they're "hard sticks."

My first catheter was on a female in nursing school.  She really needed peri care, sorry TMI.

My first NGT was on an ETOH withdrawal pt.  He was confused (like all of them are) and in soft restraints.  This was another one of my fears.  Now I always volunteer to put them in for my co workers.
