We actually cruised Glacier Bay - the Inside Passage Tour - on Holland America and I cannot recommend it enough. Trip of
a lifetime and I have yet to go on another cruise/line as good as HA. We went to three or four glaciers - Mendenhall (near Juneau),
The calving shot is from Johns Hopkins Inlet. The wide glacier shot is Margerie Glacier (I'm pretty sure). I've honestly got to go look up the glacier we saw (from a distance) during our whale watching tour and the
one we landed on for the helicopter ride (I think it's Davidson Glacier since it's near Skagway where we took off).
Cities were Juneau, Skagway, and Ketchikan (probably my favorite because of the totem pole artists)
We actually departed from Vancouver, arriving one day early (went to the museum) and then stayed in Vancouver for four days after. We went to Seattle for one day and Victoria, BC (highly recommend!) for one day, too. Final day was spent
touring around Vancouver's Stanley Park (breathtaking).
I loved Alaska SOOOOO much and I'm dying to go back - fully armed this time with all my digital toys!
Big advice/tips:
- take a covertible jacket w/ hood that goes four ways - one with a zip out puffy that can be worn alone, zipped in, zipped out. We found that all pieces came in handy during different portions of the trip.
-We went on the last cruise of the year - the weather was perfect! No bugs, warm some days, and just enough chill to still feel like you're in Alaska. The coldest we got was on top of mountains and glaciers. ;o)
-Don't go on a whale watching tour on a BIG boat if you can handle smaller boats (some people can't or are afraid). What we found was that while we saw a lot from a distance, the boats cannot get to them fast enough - turn around time and
all. Later we found out about smaller boat tours and the boats are much more agile and can get closer faster.
-Sled dog camps are fun even without snow. The puppies are ADORABLE!
