Satin Ribbon question

OK all you amazing DIY-Divas!  Question: is there an idiot-proof way to cut satin ribbon so that it will not fray?  Do they make something like heated scissors or something like that?  I have a bunch of projects coming up and have started buying some really nice satin ribbon and I don't want it to get messed up!  I know I can probably use like fray-stop-goop or clear nailpolish - but I'd like something a little less tedious... any suggestions?

Oh, also - does anyone have a good place to get good quality satin ribbon at discount prices?

TIA ladies!  :)

I've recently started my projects and I'd say as long as you have nice sharp scissors or shears, you'll be fine.

I also picked up a TON of ribbon at Michaels from theire $1 bins.  They sell 5 yard spools and they have all colors like sage green, ivory, white, orange (my colors haha).

I also like Joanne's.  A bit cheaper than Michaels.

Good luck!

Ditto Geoffygirl. I had some janky scissors for ribbon I used to tie my invites with.  They frayed right away and thought I had to get some special goo to make it work.  I bought some new craft scissors and did not have any problem with fraying after that.

HTH!

My good friend is a belly-dancer and makes her own costumes all the time. There is something like a hot scissors... I do not have contact with her right now, but a few years ago she used it while I was there... I will look into it.

Here is a link to the product... Kinda pricy, could be passed around ...

I bought the Martha Stewart brand scissors for $20 at Michaels.  Every since I got them, my ribbon has not frayed.  i have used them to do all of the favors, programs, and a few other projects.   Two tips - cut at an angle because it does not fray as fast.  Also, I just mine to the right length and then re-cut once the ribbon was pused through the holes (like for the programs).  The ribbon tends to fray as you are making the project, but did not if I trimmed it as the last step.

as far as buying ribbon goes... i was having difficulty finding my colors (navy, sage and ivory) in very skinny satin.  after hitting all the crafties, i ended up finding it at wally world (aka walmart).  if anyone goes there to look, just know that besides the fabric dept ribbon, there's another aisle with way more by what i guess is floral artificial stuff.

i can't STAND wally world personally.  but, i must admit, they've done me right when it comes to ribbon!

OK so I just bought some super sharp 'detail' scissors - we'll see how they pan out.  I just bought them at 'wally world'  (lol lizzy that's what we call them too).  The one here actually has a pretty decent craft department and they have the whole line of Martha Stewart craft and wedding stuff.  And I was able to find the exact same buttons that details my garter set from etsy so now I can match up the RB pillow and FG basket - woohoo!

pinkgerbers thanks for the tip about trimming as the last step - that thought hadn't occured to me but makes darn good sense!  :)
