Has anyone else ever had a total spice disaster? You used the wrong spice, you used too much of a spice, or the spice itself was just... overwhelming?

I tried a recipe with puff pastry last week and DH loved the puff pastry but not so much the filling. His exact words were, "I really like this puff pastry stuff. We should come up with other stuff to go in it. Unless you don't like it. In which case, I hate it and think it's disgusting." He's so sweet, isn't he? ;)

So I did some searching and found a recipe (a Martha Stewart recipe) for beef and potato hand pies. So I sauteed a little onion, browned up some beef, threw in a diced yellow potato... and then I added the recommended spice. Smoked paprika.

Oh my good lord. The smoked paprika was totally nasty and overwhelming. It smelled bad and tasted worse. I like paprika normally, so I didn't think it would be a big jump to go to smoked paprika. I was SO WRONG.

What really makes me sad is that I only cooked 3 of the pies yesterday, and have 5 more sitting in the fridge that I haven't baked yet that were supposed to be dinner tonight... except neither DH or I liked them. We might try to foist them off on some of DH's guy friends who usually live off of frozen dinners. DH also asked if I could come up with some sort of sauce for them that might help disguise the taste, but I honestly can't think of anything.

Ok, so there's my disaster... anybody else have a spice fiasco they want to share? :)

YES!!!  But it was my sweet DH who did it.  He is an amazing cook, and rarely makes anything that most people wouldn't devour BUT there is 1 time which I can distinctly remember him making something that both of us thought was GROSS!!  I think it started from him watching a TV show and learning that saffron was one of the most expensive spices out there.  Well he went to the store and bought some thinking, hmmmm maybe I'll make a great chicken dish out of this.  WELL, he ended up putting wayyyy too much Saffron on the Chicken and once it was baked it ended up tasting more like feet than chicken.  Moral to the story- saffron is something that you can use to add an extra flavor to a base of something else, but you should never use it as a primary seasoning to Chicken.  LOL!
