To women who have been bridesmaids

I'm dying from ALS. Lately I have been thinking of the things I will never experience. None of my married friends asked me to be in their wedding parties and the remaining unmarried friend probably won't ask me because of my condition. I have maybe at most 3 years to live. I just want to get an idea of what it feels like to be asked to be apart of a very important day. I had always hoped that I would be in one wedding, because I wanted to know that I mattered a lot to a friend to let me stand up with them. I will never know that feeling, but I want to hear different stories of how it feels to be asked to be apart of a wedding.

wow, this is so sad :( I'm sorry to hear of your condition. It is an honor to be asked. I've been a bridesmaid and now a bride and it's a very delicate situation in both roles. I'm sorry that you don't think you "matter a lot" to your friends just because you weren't asked to be in the wedding. I'm hoping none of my friends feel this way. There are many factors that go into choosing a bridal party and there have to be cuts somewhere. I'm sure your friends love and appreciate you. Try to think about all of the special moments you have had with your friends. 

Thank you for responding to me amisaacs. I know that in weddings, cuts have to be made, but I just hoped that I would have been asked at least once. I do try to think of the special moments I've had with my friends, but I feel missed out a lot because when the married ones were planning their weddings, the ones asked to be bridesmaids got to do a lot of fun things like bachelorette parties, spa days etc. One of my closest friends got married in 2009 and at her bridal shower she gave her bridesmaids custom made necklaces and that really made me sad.

I am so sorry for everything you're going through! It must be very difficult to live with ALS and reflecting on your life.

I've never been a bridesmaid myself, though I am throwing a bridal shower for a close friend (she is not having a bridal party, so I volunteered). So I can't say I've had the glee and excitement of being asked. But it wears off! Because being in a wedding party can be very frustrating! It could depend on many factors, financial contribution, the other girls aren't helping, someone in the bridal party being a diva, or the bride herself is a bridezilla... Sometimes it's nice to sit back and just be a guest! 

Do you feel like your friends have never asked you because of your medical condition? Or that they didn't feel close enough to you?

If that's the case, it might be a good time to reach out to your friends. Not just ones to be engaged, but everyone who makes you happy, and just spend some quality time with them. Have them join you in activities you have always wanted to do, or simply chat on the phone. Your friends can help you stay strong with their good vibes.

I was diagonsed with ALS in early 2010, my condition was never the reason they didn't ask. I don't think they will ask me now that I'm sick because I'm wheelchair bound and my speech is starting to go.  I don't the reasons why I was never asked, sometimes I feel that wasn't good enough to be asked. There were several times that I thought some very close friends would ask me and they never did.

I was MOH in my sister wedding and I am a recent bride.  Many bridesmaids and maid of honors do not take this duty seriously and when they do not, this can be very stressful on the bride. As my sister's maid of honor, I was her footstool and waited on hand and foot. I made sure she had a wonderful day and any fires that arose, I put them out. It was fun planning her bridal showers and all the DIY projects we did together.  I have the honor of being in a fellow Project Wedding Bride's wedding in 2014. She helped with my wedding and then asked if I would be her bridesmaid - I am totally honored! I told her I am her footstool!

It is so sad to share this with you with all you are going through.  It can be an honor being a bridesmaid but it can also be very stressful if you have a bride that has you pulling your hair out! And please don't feel like you don't matter, because you do!

I have heard a lot of people say that being in a bridal party can be stressful and I can tell that it is.  I think I just wanted the experience of being close to a bride on her big day.
