i live in boca raton which is in between fort lauderdale & west palm beach. i love it here. it's got a little bit of everything and if you want more action then go to ft. lauderdale or west palm for the night/
day. people in boca really love their dogs. you can even bring a little dog in a stroller to the mall. boca can be a bit upper class but there's also many "regular" people here (like us). it's very family friendly
too.
i grew up in hollywood which is in between ft. lauderdale and miami. it's very old school and depending on the neighborhood could be a little scary. i wouldn't recommend hollywood unless is east by the
beach.
i went to school in gainesville (go gators!!!) and it's a very nice place to live. it can be very much a college town if you are close to the school, but there are some really nice places just outside of the city
limits. gainesville is very people friendly. i really miss it at times.
we have friends in naples that we visit very often and i love it there too. there's something about that coast that really gets to me. it's very laid back. although naples can be a little too quiet and old at times but
they are really jazzing that area up so that younger people and families move there.
hope this helps...if you have any questions just ask. 8-)
